

Robert honorably served his country during WWII from July 1943-February 1946, in The United States Army. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant during war acting Tec Sergeant. He was stationed at Camp Grant Illinois, Camp Adair Oregon, Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, Camp Miles Standish Mass, Newport News Virginia, Camp Bunter North Carolina and Camp McCoy Wisconsin.
His duties included Anti Tank Gun Commander 10 man squad. During the war, he was the acting Platoon Sergeant, defending Regimental Headquarters; participated in the Battle of Bulge.; did MP duty on a ship that carried prisoners of war; was part of the 70th Division that took Saarbrucken City on the Sarr River. In July 1945, he returned to the US and was placed in the 4th Division to train for the invasion of Japan but the 2 Atomic put an end to that – Thank you President Truman. Robert met General Patton on July 4th 1945 when General Patton gave a speech at the Nazi Amp Theater.
Robert’s honors received include: Combat infantry Badge, European Theater Cour-le-Guere French Award, Battle Star for crossing the Sarr and Rhine Rivers and the Presidential Unit Citation 4th Division.
After the War, Robert attended Northland College in Ashland, WI and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Forestry. He worked for the US Forest Service in California before retiring to Sun City, AZ in 1980.
Robert was very active in the Lions Club International for over 50 years in both California and Sun City, AZ; the Sportsman Club of Sun City and a true “Outdoorsman.”
He is preceded in death by, his beloved wife, Maudie Werner, brother, Carlton Werner, Jr., his parents, Rowena Werner and Carlton Werner, Sr.
Robert is survived by his children, Barbara (Roy) Pruett of South Fork, CO, Robert (Ronda) Werner, Jr., of Visalia, CA, Robert (Barb) Powers of Twin Falls, ID, Sue Power of Camarillo, CA, Michael (Bonnie) Werner of Superior, WI and Patti (Frank) Hagen of Sedalia, MO; siblings, Marjorie (Bill) Nichols of Sister Bay, WI, Dick (Rosane) Werner of Syracuse, NY, Gloria (Harry) Hannum of Illinois, Patsy (Joe) Kreuser of Green Bay, WI and Donald Werner and family of Arizona; 13 grandchildren and more than 20 great-grandchildren.
