Sandra Sue Richards, age 81, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at her home in Peoria, AZ surrounded by her loving family. Sandra was born November 16, 1937, in Akron, Iowa to Spike and Jane Brown. She always looked up to her older brother Clark. In high school she played basketball, softball, tennis, played drums in the high school band, participated in the girls glee club and chorus and co-edited the year book. She won the good citizen award, was the band queen and homecoming queen. She graduated validictorian of Mechanicsville High School in 1956. She was voted Miss Mechanicsville two years in a row. The first year she was the runner up and the second year she became Miss Cedar County where she became a candidate for the Miss Iowa pagent in 1957, which was part of the Miss America pageant. Her talent for the contest was playing the xyophone. She was also nominated for Miss State University of Iowa, now known as the University of Iowa, where she was a top 10 finalist. She worked as a medical technologist and was head of lab and x-ray at Peoples Hospital in Independence, Iowa. More recently she was the president of Spencer CC, and Union Hills CC 18 hole ladies organization. She served as Vice President, handicap chairman, press, rules and yearbook chairman at Palm Brook CC. Her hobbies were reading, playing tennis, golf and bridge. She loved to travel and visited all 50 states as well as 50 other countries. She is survived by her husband Robert (Bob) Richards; her daughters Lori (Denny) Royce and Robin Richards and husband (Todd Bukowski) and their daughter Claire. Sandra and Robert celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary December 21st. She is remembered as his best friend, love of his life and the nicest person he had ever met. She will forever be in our hearts.
Memorial services will be held at Sundland Memorial, 15826 Del Webb Blvd. Sun City Arizona on January 7th at 11:00 am.
