

David L. Matthews, February 17, 1956 - November 29, 2012, Born in Mount Pleasant, PA, moved to Arizona in 1986 and lived in Waddell, AZ when he passed away. David met his wife Cindy, at Harmony Heart Church Camp in Scranton, PA in 1975 and they married on January 7, 1977. David received a dual degree from Philadelphia Biblical University in 1979 (Bachelors of Science in Social Work and Bible) and was ordained as a pastor a few years later. David worked 24 years for the State of Arizona as a Program Administrator in the Office of Licensing, Certification, & Regulation (OLCR) within the Department of Economic Security (DES). “ OCLR is committed to protecting the health, safety, and well-being of children and vulnerable adults receiving care or support in DES regulated programs.” David had a passion for the Grand Canyon, having hiked the Grand Canyon over 70 times and was an avid backcountry hiker. David is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Cindy; two loving children Sarah and son in-law Daniel Horacek and Joshua and daughter in-law Justine Matthews; two dear grandchildren Cameron and Owen Horacek; two brothers Bob Matthews and John McLeod; two sisters Cindy Smailes-Rybak and Ronalee Matthews. David is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Naomi Matthews; and two nieces Amanda Smailes and Tracy Hutchinson. The Memorial Service will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Christ Church of the Valley, 14787 W. Cholla St., Surprise, AZ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in David’s memory to the Hospice of the Valley or the American Cancer Society.
