Gilbert J. Line passed away in Sun City West, Arizona on April 23, 2024 at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Vivian (Madge) Line. He is survived by his wife Patricia, his children Michael Line, Brenda K. Line, and James (Liane) Line, his siblings John Line, Sr. and Alice (Bob) Wathen, his step-children Steven (Ashley) Ochs and Laura Olivieri, his nieces and nephews John Jr., Jeffrey, Debra, Kelly, Steven, Robin, Don, and Eric, his grandchildren Karly, Cody, Anthony, Luke, Zachary, Chayton, Kennedy, Ben, and Ethan, and great grandchildren Maven, Liam and Jaxson, along with a host of friends, relatives, and neighbors.
Gil was born in Muskegon on September 16, 1942 and spent most of his life in western Michigan. He graduated from Muskegon High School in 1960 and by then had had already been working for several years. He had a strong work ethic and worked at Muskegon Auto Parts, running their machine shop and later, was long-time employee at City of Muskegon; first, as a mechanic who repaired police cars and snow plows, and finishing his career as a housing inspector. He retired from the City in 1999 after 30 years of service.
Beginning early in life, Gil was especially fond of two things: building things and loving the outdoors. His sister recalls being fascinated by things he built with his metal Erector Set and the story his mom told of his first words - saying “big tub!” upon seeing Lake Michigan. He loved woodworking as a teen and made many crafts including a jig saw puzzle for his sister. As an adult, he made a wooden reindeer with removable antlers for her at Christmas time and later, hand-built his own home, which was heated solely with wood that he loved chopping. His brother remembers that he could take apart any machine and put it back together to work correctly. He liked raising vegetables in his garden and even raised a couple hogs for meat.
In 1984 he met Patricia, and she became the love of his life. With a wonderful, blended family, they spent their first few years together in Muskegon before buying their dream-cottage on Newel Lake in Hesperia. They loved it there, where they had all the projects, gardens, and the beautiful lake to keep them busy and happy. After retirement they spent their summers in Hesperia and winters traveling to their favorite condo in Gulf Shores, Alabama, his niece and relatives in Oklahoma, and visiting their children and grandchildren in Arizona, where they remained after covid. They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in December 2023.
But most of all, Gil loved his family and friends, and was a fierce protector and provider for his children. He did his best at co-parenting under difficult circumstances and extended that same love and protection to his step-children. He was a kind and gentle person with a quick and dry wit that brought enjoyable laughs to all who knew him. He was well-respected, is deeply loved, and will be profoundly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 3, 2024 in Muskegon, MI. Further details about the event can be provided upon request. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in his honor to the Hesperia Community Library.
