A beloved mother, wife and grandmother, Mary Lou Hutchison passed away on September 14, 2021, after a valiant battle with illness. Mary Lou was a remarkable woman who led an equally remarkable life. She travelled the world with her husband Terry and fully enjoyed all that life had to offer.
Mary Lou was born in Everett Washington on February 15th, 1938, to William and Gladys Owens. She grew up in Lake Stevens Washington and was the first born to what would eventually become 10 children. At the completion of high school, she attended Seattle University where she graduated with a degree in Education. After graduation, Mary Lou moved to Long Beach California and began her teaching career. She fully enjoyed the beach life with what would become a group of lifelong friends. Soon afterwards she was presented with the opportunity to take a teaching position in France which she happily accepted. Not long after she arrived, she met her future husband Terry at the Nancy Army depot in Nancy France. They married in Basel Switzerland on June 16, 1964. The following year, their first son Jeff was born on March 31st, 1965. Terry and Mary Lou enjoyed many adventures during their brief time in Europe.
Their next stop was Letterkenny Army base in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania where they welcomed their second son Robert. The family soon returned to Europe, as Terry accepted a position at the Pirmasens Army depot as the assistant to the commander. Once there, Mary Lou and the family travelled extensively and enjoyed fine foods, skiing, sightseeing, and collecting antiques. In 1975 Mary Lou and the family returned to the States. They lived in Steamboat Springs Colorado for a short time before Terry took a government job in Ogden Utah.
In 1978, the family moved to Spearfish South Dakota where they started a wood carving business. As demand for their artwork grew, Mary Lou and Terry traveled the country extensively over the next 20 years attending art shows and selling their creations. Mary Lou and Terry lived in various spots throughout the years including Mesa, AZ, Thurmont, MD, and Custer, SD. In 1999 Mary Lou and Terry retired from the art show business and moved to Florence, OR to be closer to their grandchildren. Mary Lou enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters and shared her love for cooking and good food with them. She was a very proud grandparent, and she loved documenting their lives in her scrapbooks. In 2003 Terry and Mary Lou moved to Surprise, AZ to enjoy the sunshine and the retirement lifestyle.
Mary Lou is survived by her sons Jeff (Wendy) and Robert (Kimberly) and three granddaughters, Megan, Madeleine, and Mackenzie. She is also survived by her sisters, Carolyn, Ruthie and Terry and her brothers Tommy, David, and Billie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Terry Hutchison.
