Our favorite son, Matthew Aaron Larsen, unexpectedly passed away, peacefully at the Banner Del E Webb Medical Center in Sun City West, Arizona on Sept. 19, 2025. He was the son of Melanie and Danny Larsen of Belfair, WA, born at Mercy Hospital in Nampa, Idaho on November 3, 1977 and raised on their farm in Marsing, ID at the base of the Owyhee Mountains. Matt was active on the farm helping his father irrigate and harvest crops while managing a small herd of beef cows. This is where his roots and values shaped the caring, dependable, and joyful person he became. In his later years, he often spoke about life on the farm and the challenges that went along with scratching out a living from the land.
After turning 16 years old, he worked at various jobs in Marsing such as the White House Drive-in and Mr. B’s Grocery store while attending school. He especially enjoyed working with his grandmother, Venet Larsen, at Mr. B’s cutting meat and helping with the bookkeeping. He graduated as salutatorian of his Marsing High School class in 1996 and was active in the band and Business Professionals of America. Upon graduation he attended DeVry Institute of Technology in Phoenix, AZ and graduated from there in October 1999 with his bachelor’s degree. He then accepted a position as a computer programmer with Arizona Public Services and worked for APS from 2000-2008.
At the center of Matt’s world was his husband whom he met the love of his life, Alan King in 2006. From 2006 until Matt’s passing, they were inseparable and shared a deep and enduring love for one another. In 2008 they moved to Port Orchard, WA so he could enter a new career and to be close to his parents. In 2010 they purchased a home in Port Orchard WA and Matt accepted a position in Bremerton WA (near Port Orchard) as a computer programmer for the Kitsap Credit Union and worked there until 2013. That same year, Matt and Alan committed their love for one another by getting married. Together, they built a life filled with joy, adventure, and unwavering support for one another.
Matt then accepted a new career growth opportunity to the Kitsap County Department of Information Services to work as a Programmer/Analyst. Matt's proudest achievement was obtaining WorkDay Pro Certification and was instrumental in launching the WorkDay Program to the County. His focus was on implementing cutting-edge technology throughout all county departments. Matt was extremely capable in anything he confronted and had excellent trouble-shooting skills. Matt was highly respected for his dedication, integrity, and commitment to the job by his peers.
Matt will be remembered for his warm smile, his ability to make others feel at ease, being an awesome conversationist for his sharp mind and keen wit. He had a gift for brightening a room, whether through his humor, his compassion, or willingness to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed playing classical music on the piano and was an avid reader. Matt’s number one passion in life and how he expressed his love for others was through his delicious meals that were seasoned with love always.
Matt is survived by his beloved husband, Alan King, his father Danny Larsen, and sister Monica Larsen. His mother, Melanie Larsen preceded him in death as did his paternal and maternal grandparents- Everette & Venet Larsen and John & Patricia Lootens. He also leaves behind one niece, Ashley Hink and two nephews, Josh Larsen and Jacob Larsen. A memorial service in Port Orchard, WA will be announced shortly. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend and share in honoring his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests to donate in Matthew’s name to the Human Rights Campaign at www.hrc.org or any LGBT+ affiliated charity of their choice in Matt’s memory.
