THE DRAGONFLY
Once, in a little pond, in the muddy water under the lily pads, there lived a little water beetle in a community of water beetles. They lived a simple and comfortable life in the pond with few disturbances and interruptions. Once in a while, sadness would come to the community when one of their fellow beetles would climb the stem of a lily pad and would never be seen again. They knew when this happened; their friend was dead, gone forever.
Then, one day, one little water beetle felt an irresistible urge to climb up that stem. However, he was determined that he would not leave forever. He would come back and tell his friends what he had found at the top. When he reached the top and climbed out of the water onto the surface of the lily pad, he was so tired, and the sun felt so warm, that he decided he must take a nap. As he slept, his body changed and when he woke up, he had turned into a beautiful blue-tailed dragonfly with broad wings and a slender body designed for flying.
So, fly he did! And, as he soared he saw the beauty of a whole new world and a far superior way of life to what he had never known existed. Then he remembered his beetle friends and how they were thinking by now he was dead. He wanted to go back to tell them, and explain to them that he was now more alive than he had ever been before. His life had been fulfilled rather than ended. But, his new body would not go down into the water. He could not get back to tell his friends the good news. Then he understood that their time would come, when they, too, would know what he now knew. So, he raised his wings and flew off into his joyous new life!

ON MY WAY TO YUMA  

The desert is lifeless; it's windy and chilly,
There's even frost biting the life of a desert lily.
I'm on my horse riding a very narrow road, 
The hoofs of the horse seem to tap out a code.
I sing along thinking it will keep me warm,
I see a light, it must be a farm.

I'm only 4 miles from Yuma, my home,
I can't wait to guzzle a beer topped with foam.
It's been a hell of a trip from Dodge City,
That's where I met Miss Kitty.

Sheriff Dillion killed a man, John Digham, a thug and killer,
He was left in the street for coroner Miller.
I picked up supplies and headed for the saloon,
Where I met Miss Kitty standing all aloon.

She looked mighty fine with a low top dress,
As she walked toward me with a strut of success,
How Dee, she said and asked if I needed company,
I said no and assured her I had plenty.
I grabbed my beer to sit alone, 
When a gal sat down smelling of cologne.
She said hello in a sexy way as I gazed in her eyes,
I knew she wanted money but she was full of lies.

I guzzled my beer and left the place
I know I'm a hermit as I left with grace,
I'm heading home to Yuma before I lose face.

As I headed out of town, a cowboy drew his gun,
I knew right then it wasn't for fun.
I shot him in the arm, but I met no harm.

A cowboy is a lonesome trail,
So just wanted to get home to read some mail.
The cold is approaching so I headed home,
To be by myself, I like being alone.

I was so shocked to learn that Tom passed awy soon after his surgery.  Diane Stewart sent me a copy of the e-mail notice a couple of weeks ago.  I am so sorry.
I hope you are doing okay, though I'm sure it is extremely difficult.
My prayers are for you to find peace from the many wonderful experiences you and Tom had for so many (35) years.  May God bless you with strength and health through this challenging time.

I'm sure these last weeks, days and hours have left you very tired and feeling alone.  It all sort of seems to go by in a blur and then reality sets in and it is a new life you will be facing.  Trust me, you will be okay, but there will be many days and nights before you slip out of knowing Tom is gone.  I know you have made lots of friends and you are a "people person" so there will be things for you to do and places to go, and believe me it is important that you do.  I find that since Chuck passed away that the busier I keep, the happier I am.
As you know, you have been in my thoughts and prayers and will continue, and always be.  I look forward to talking to you when the time is right for you.

I recall Tom's hole in one on #8 Granite Falls North during "Family Golf" on a Monday with you gals behind us.  Every time I stand on that tee box, blue pin, great shot-I think of Tom.  Spoke with him after Men's Club in May and he joked about trying to gain weight before his surgery, what a great attitude.  He had plenty of friends but I sure appreciated that he let me be one more.  The checked flag on his golf cart said it all--He was a "winner".  He will always be with us in spirit.  We will cherish our memories.  We love you and our thoughts and prayers are with you now.

I was not aware of the Celebration of your husband's life-I would have at least had the opportunity of giving you a big "bear" hug. Tip:  Keep very, very busy and the phyysical pain in your heart will eventually subside.  The "missing" never really does, but somehow we are all survivors.

I'm not sure you will reconize who is writing you this note, as we have only met briefly on two separate occasions.  I did want to tell you how sorry I was to about your loss.  Tom was always a gentleman to play golf with, and was just simply put, fun to be around.  There will be a large contingent that will miss him during the Men's Eents and frankly, it won't be the same without him.  He was a wonderful friend.

I was so sad to hear of the passing of Tom.  My husband was reading the Mpls. Sunday paper this morning and saw the obituary.  He talked with our neighbors Terry and Dorothy Rose who gave us your address.  Please accept our hearfelt sympathy and prayers.  Tom was such an outgoing person (you both are) and we know how much he loved golf.
It was so fun to see you both a few years ago when you had a retirement party for Tom at Ridgewood Golf Course in Longville.  I'm glad to know that you enjoyed Arizona.  We love it too and are looking forward to returning for a couple of months next March and April.  Our Minnesota winters are just getting longer and longer.  The ice did not go off our lake until May 15.
You and Tom were such a cute couple and I'm sure you have lots of wonderful memories that will keep him close to your heart forever.

I was so sorry to hear of Tom's passing.  I thoroughly enjoyed the times I spent with him, especially on Ridgewood Golf course.  He taught me a lot about golf, which allowed me to thoroughly enjoy the game.  He will always be in my thoughts, as I find my way through each day on the golf course.

I am shocked and devastated to hear of Tom's passing. Tom was my best friend in table tennis and I was very disappointed he had to leave the game due to his neck injury.
Tom and I played double's together for many year's and were state double's champion's one year. We extended the 1988 US Women's Olympic Team to the limit before losing at a tournament in Nebraska and played the Seemiller brother's, Danny, 5 time US Champion and many time US team member, and Ricky, many time US team member, to a respectable match in Iowa. Tom and I both had what might have been the best shot's of our lives during that match. I got lucky and counter killed Danny's loop and a couple of shot's later Tom counter killed Ricky's kill shot. We were a very tough doubles team for a couple of 40+ year olds. 
I always enjoyed traveling and playing tournament's with Tom, had fun and laughs. Tom had a great zest for life and enjoyed every moment. 
I will always treasure my memories of competing with and against Tom, in leagues an local tournament's. Brandon Olson, 1987 US team member, told me several year's ago that some of the best matches he had ever seen was when Tom and I played against each other in leagues. What a great compliment from Brandon who competed and witnessed world class players in competition! We had great matches because we both hated to lose.
It has been my honor and privilege to have had Tom as my friend and to have shared these experiences with him.
As I informed the Minnesota table tennis community of Tom's passing while expressing their sorrow many mentioned what a great guy Tom was. He will be missed.
Word's cannot express my sorrow.

Iam so sorry for your loss. As you know I met Tom in 3rd grade and we saw each other almost every day thru 12th grade and then at UMD. I just wanted you to know the "Celebration of Life" at the Dignity Funeral Home was the perfect tribute to Tom. The incredible turn out of friends came as a shock to no one because of how well you both are liked within the community. Tom will definitely be missed!

I'm sorry I couldn't attend the reception afterwards to express my condolences in person, but I have a medical issue and the recovery is slow and tedious, but pales in comparison to what Tom suffered. He was a trooper but I certainly understand the joint decision the two of you made at the end.

We are so terribly sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. Alice and I heard about it this morning and were totally caught off guard. We were both devastated. We cannot imagine how you must feel at this time.

Tom was a wonderful person and it showed every time I've been with him. I will never forget the time he and I helped decorate the tables at the annual Polish American meeting. Neither one of us new exactly what we were doing but every time
he looked at you for approval he would just smile. You were so happy and he enjoyed showing how much he cared about you.

I am very sad and sorry to hear about Uncle Tom's passing!  I have a lot of wonderful memories of him from when I was younger!  When we had family get togethers, I always looked forward to seeing him.  Uncle Tom ALWAYS made time for me, Michael and Brian!  I remember talking baseball with him and in fact, I think he tried teaching me how to throw a curve ball.  Uncle Tom always made me laugh as well, he was a funny guy!  One thing that I am grateful to Uncle Tom for was that he was always encouraging of me and my athletics and with that-he helped me believe in myself and my abilities as a girl playing with and against the boys back in a time when not many girls played sports like they do today!  He was one hell of a guy and Uncle that I will always cherish my memories of him!

I knew Tom when I worked at USF&G and he was such a nice, fun and great guy to be around. I will remember the softball games to company picnics and to see his passion for the Insurance business with his dept. was next to mine. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

Dorothy I feel so bad as Tom was a very special person.  Charlie and I want to send our most deepest sympathy and hope your doing OK.  We have been busy packing as were moving on Friday to Plymouth. Tom was one of a kind---   always a smile on his face and a good word for all.   The four of us enjoyed many good times together and we feel blessed that Tom was in our lives ,even if  for so short a time.

  Betty and I were shocked and saddened by the news that Tom had passed
away.We realize that it will come,but death leaves us with a sense of grief and loss that we never expect.The wonderful memories that you shared with Tom will help in this sorrowful time.With the help of family, friends,and those wonderful memories  I  know that this sorrow will heal. My last conversation
with Tom in the driveway brings to mind my favorite quote " if we meet again,why we shall smile,if not,then this parting was well made"

Dorothy, Sorry to hear of your loss.  Tom and I shared several years of work and travel with Citizens/Meridian/State Auto Insurance companies and leaned on each other as we worked through those transitions.  He had a great knowledge of the insurance business and was a good mentor to me.  God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Tom for a short time while working with him. He had a passion for insurance, and really enjoyed people. I always found him happy and eager to share his favorite sports or stories. I am a better person to have known Tom.

Dorothy,  We are so sad to here about uncle Tom. He was a great guy with a great sense of  humor. I will never forget the time he played Santa at Doug And Carol's house for Christmas . He was a pro and made every one laugh. Karen and I were so glad we were able to see him this past spring.We could tell he liked living in Arizona. He was great with Dan and I when we had to hang that mini blind in your garage. He said that thing was never gong to fall. He will greatly missed by all of us. Love Chris,Karen and Alyssa

Heard of the sad news yesterday via your email be forwarded to me. Did not know of the ordeal both of you were going through. Being in Utah has kept me out of the loop.

I will ask my Bible study sisters to help me pray for you and your family during this time. I know that you are a strong person yet prayers always help.

Pam just read to me your jousting about nurse Pam feeling helpless not being there to assist. Last evening we cocktailed and dined in our room on Maui. I sent you a picture I took from our deck while were were toasting Tom. This is our Tom's picture. Please know that this hits hard and its difficult to make sense of it, but, just as I was growing close to Tom he slipped away from me. I believe Tom knew he was seriously ill and spoke of it - even when he had a very large hamburger with us at Angela's two days before surgery. I believe he dived into the breach because you worked so darn hard to see that he had every good chance. He mentioned how hard this was for you and was willing to go the distance for you. You are both loved by so many and that goes far. So, nurse Pam is content with everyones efforts but wishes so much she was there to hug you this moment. Hugs will be the first order of business upon our return. Our love,
