It is with great sadness that the family of Ann Patricia Coupland-Ball announces her peaceful passing during the night of January 16, 2017, at the age of 85. Earlier in the day, she had spoken with a number of her children and a sister, and then fell asleep and passed away peacefully during the night.
Ann is predeceased by her first husband of 49 years, Charles Arthur (“Art”) Ball, her second husband William (“Bill”) George Coupland, nieces Beverly Steen and Theresa Hart, brother-in-law John Hart, and son-in law, Steve Cardiff.
Ann is survived by her three sisters, Norma (Peter), Angela, and Elaine. Ann is lovingly remembered by her six children, Deborah (Derek), Sharon (Karl), Susan (Sinta), Rachael, Christopher, and Peter (Angie). Ann was dearly loved by her grandchildren, Caroline (father Carl),Kristina & Marko, Anne & Stuart (father Randy), Iain, Spencer and Charlie, her first great-grandchild Gwen (father Mike) and nieces and nephews Gregory (Karen), Karen (Chip), Michael (Mona), Michele, Bill, Josh and Amanda, as well as a host of long-time cherished friends.
Ann was born in St. Pancras, London, England on August 26th, 1931. She grew up in London prior to and during World War II, and was later able to tell her children the stories of her life during that time, and the celebration of VE Day. As young woman, and after the war, Ann moved to Cornwall with her family, where she met her first husband Arthur in Redruth, from whom she accepted his proposal of marriage after only two weeks. Soon after, they relocated to Africa, where they were married and began a new life in Nigeria. Two years after the birth of her first daughter Deborah, who spent her early childhood years in Africa, Ann and her family emigrated to Canada in 1957, and spent much of her life in Canada’s North, raising her six children. Ann enjoyed her well-deserved retirement years in Salmon Arm with her husband Arthur, where they made many close friends, before moving to White Rock where she resided until her passing. Ann was blessed to meet her second husband Bill in her final years, and their time together was a gift she cherished.
For those who knew Ann, they will remember that next to loving her family and friends, Ann loved to read! Ann spent countless hours enjoying all written works, including but not limited to history, poetry, and all great forms of literature. She could speak on any topic with clarity, thoughtfulness and sincere interest, and on trivia night, Ann would be the one her family would want on their side. Ann loved to travel and meet people, was capable of striking up a conversation with anyone, and was truly interested in who they were and what they were thinking. Her understanding of global events grew from her many years of travel, and she closely followed world politics, caring greatly about the future of the world and its people.
On occasion, Ann could be seen laughing out loud watching Seinfeld, playing a sharp game of pool, or reminiscing about her days in England and watching Coronation Street. She was also very proud that her son Peter, with whom she shared the art of making a traditional Cornish Pasty, could do so better than his siblings, even though she would silently comment that “he doesn’t cut the potatoes like I do.” Throughout Ann’s years, she had a passion for the outdoors, including gardening, cross country skiing, animals and her love of Irish and English Setters, as well as all forms of music and movie classics and maintaining a balanced diet and clean lifestyle.
Ann’s spiritual strength guided her through the challenges and celebrations in her life, and she shared her faith and its teachings of kindness, understanding and courage with all who knew her. Ann always encouraged her children and grandchildren to aspire to great things and to overcome challenges with fortitude and grace. Her family will forever miss her love, her strength, her attitude, and being an awesome sister, mom, aunt, nana and dear friend.
