Art (as he was known) grew up in a large family on the Wirch farm in Manola, Alberta. They moved when Art was 12 yrs old to Chilliwack B.C. where he later met his wife Linda. He moved to Vancouver and worked at CP Telegraph and Macmillan Bloedell.
In 1967, Art took a job in Fremont, California with Friden Singer and Linda and kids moved there. He was active in the Alliance Church and was involved in building a new church, as the church treasurer and sang in the choir. He was the tenor in a number of trios.
The family returned to Vancouver in 1972 when he took a position with Custom Cheques where he retired some 28 years later with high regard by the people he managed. Art continued to be active in 10th Avenue Alliance Church where he was the church treasurer and choir member for many years. He also developed his hobby of buying and selling cars and the auto repair business during this time.
Throughout his life he was the consumate sports fan. While younger he played softball, badminton, lacrosse and golf. Art enjoyed watching just about any sporting event from professional sports teams, Vancouver Indy, Junior hockey and lacrosse or even his sons and grandkids little league games. He always enjoyed watching and being at the games.
Art is survived by his wife of 64 years Linda and their daughter Elaine Gourlay Heppner and grandkids Kristy and Allan Messier (great grandkids Keiran and Cadence), Breanne and Shiloh North (great grandkids Daylen and Bryden) and Jene and Evan Weatherhead (great granddaughter Maele), son Cal and Jean Wirch (grandkids Andrew, Matthew, and Erin) and son Greg and Alison Wirch (grandaughter Sophie). He was a kind and helpful man and was inspiration to his children.
A Celebration of Arthur’s life and a family get together is planned for June 9th, 2018 in South Surrey, B.C. In lieu of flowers donations to the Parkinson Society of B.C. are appreciated.
