Dalton was truly self-made. At just 14 years old, he sold his first photograph—an early sign of the determination and talent that would shape the rest of his life. He went on to freelance for the Winnipeg Free Press and later worked as a cameraman for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Dalton had a natural gift for capturing moments and connecting with people, something that served him well throughout his life.
Everyone knew Dalton. His unabashed personality and warm, infectious smile made him impossible to say no to and unforgettable to anyone he met. Later in life he transitioned into a career as a stockbroker, where his sharp instincts, entrepreneurial spirit, and remarkable memory for the smallest details became legendary. He also spent many years dabbling in resource ventures and mineral exploration—an area of business he thoroughly loved.
Dalton embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He had a passion for horse racing and spent many weekends with his family traveling to small towns to watch harness racing. He also enjoyed trying his luck at the casino, always with a sense of fun and optimism. A voracious reader, Dalton particularly loved biographies and could often be found with the latest issue of The Economist. His lasting impression on those around him was even captured in a book by Peter Mansbridge, a fitting tribute to a man whose personality, business sense, and unforgettable character left a mark wherever he went.
He took a genuine interest in everyone he met, collecting stories along the way and giving friends and acquaintances perfectly suited nicknames that inevitably stuck. Dalton lived life with humor, curiosity, and a stress-free spirit that drew people to him.
In his later years, Dalton made his home in White Rock, where he loved the peaceful view from his condo overlooking the ocean.
He is lovingly remembered by his children Debbie (Jeff), Lisa (Ara), and Steven (Ron); his cherished grandchildren Taline and Arden, whom he adored and took immense pride in following all of their accomplishments; and countless family members and dear friends whose lives he enriched.
A celebration of Dalton’s life will be held at Dalton’s condo on the ocean on Saturday, April 4, from 2:00–5:00 p.m. Please confirm your attendance with Debbie or Lisa by Monday, March 30.
