On July 12, 2025 we lost one of the friendliest of souls, our beloved father, grandfather and friend, David Eugene Mello. Born January 31, 1931 in Paget Parish Bermuda to Joseph & Margaret Mello (Thomas), he was the eldest of two son's.
Having attended Warwick Academy he'll tell stories of the troubles he could get into & out of. It was around grade 10 when his father died & he chose to leave school to help his Momma, tuition was expensive & he really didn't like school. Dave began working odd jobs & focused more on sports & bachelorhood.
Dave was a competitive person and an avid athlete, in his youth earned the nickname Blade. He was slim, fast and sharp on the pitch and off. At 21 he was Playing with the Bermuda National Sports Club "A" league, the Triple Crown Winners of the Cup & Trophy Competitions for 1952-53. Enjoying many sports he could also be found playing cricket, table tennis, golf and occasionally filling in as a horse jockey at the Bermuda Downs Race Track.
Always looking for adventure, in 1954 Dave could not say no to his friend Wilbur who needed a driver to take his family to the west coast. At 23 years of age Dave took on the responsibility of five lives embarking on a westward journey across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. The final destination, Victoria BC, Canada. The plan, there was no plan.
Once in Victoria Dave made new friends fast and chose to stay a while. One fateful evening at a friend's wedding he met another guest visiting from Ontario named Elba. That night she became his dance partner. Little did he know, he had swept Elba off her feet and won her heart. They enjoyed sharing over 60 years of love, life and laughter with their cherished daughter Karen, two amazing granddaughters Valerie and Livia and so many fantastic family and friends.
Dave had a gift for communicating with others so he could win over anyone he spoke with, this skill made him friends everywhere he went. He was an award-winning salesman and floor covering specialist for over 30 years finishing his career with Edgar & Minor. Dave would help anyone who needed a hand and dedicated his spare time to his family and friends.
Being surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Dave's boyhood love of fishing continued. Bestowed with his west coast nick name Bermuda Boy, this affectionately became his CB radio handle. He spent hours in his boat on the open water and inlets surrounding Vancouver Island catching salmon (or not) with his many fishing buddies and his family.
Dave and Elba raised their only daughter Karen in Victoria until retiring in 1992 when they made the move to Kelowna BC for summers warm like Bermuda and winters cool like Ontario. During retirement they enjoyed traveling to visit their families, grandchildren and the open roads exploring more of North America together.
When not travelling with Elba, Dave enjoyed a game of golf any day he chose. He was known to regularly play three rounds in one day, the last game usually with the Mrs. who loved golf just a much.
Dave filled his winters improving his artistic skills painting with water colours & sharing his original art with any who would appreciate it. Finishing their final years in Langley, Dave and Elba gave everything to their role as amazing Grand Parents doting on their granddaughters every opportunity they could. Retirement Goals achieved!
Sadly, Elba departed in December 2021, however Dave stayed strong and remained independent in their Langley condo until a minor fall June 8, 2025 landed him in the hospital under suspicion of a heart attack. Little did we know it was his time to transcend, 35 days later he passed quietly in the night at Laurel Place Hospice under the compassionate tender care from all the staff and his daughter.
United once again with his life's love, together dancing forever amongst the stars. Dave leaves behind a legacy of enduring love, moral guidance, quick wit and stubborn tenacity. Survived by his daughter Karen Mello, granddaughters Valerie & Livia, brother Larry Mello & wife Veronica, Nephew George Mello & wife Susan, Niece Natalie Morrelli-Mello (Tyler & Emily).
A Celebration of Life will be held January 31, 2026 at First Memorial Funeral Services - Fraser Heights Chapel located at 14835 Fraser Hwy, Surrey, BC. Time still to be confirmed
“In the darkness, you lead the way
Lighting my path, night and day
Showing me what is right and true
Guiding my steps, with a love brand new”
