Debra was born on June 13, 1969, to John and Laura Pankratz in Langley, B.C., where she was raised during a time when the community retained much of its rural character. She formed enduring relationships with both family and friends. Among her most treasured childhood memories were summers and weekends spent at Deka Lake in the Cariboo—days filled with reading and swimming, and evenings gathered around the campfire.
As a young adult, Debra moved to Calgary to complete her education, graduating from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She soon launched a successful career in telecommunications but was always driven by a desire to explore the world and make a meaningful impact.
Her first international experience came through an English teaching position in South Korea—an adventure that deepened her appreciation for other cultures and sparked a lifelong love of travel (and kimchi!). A few years later, and now holding an MBA, Debra followed her passion for global development to Zambia. There, she spent five years working with various NGOs supporting and expanding HIV programs. These years were transformative, reinforcing her dedication to causes close to her heart and allowing her to live out the values she held dear.
It was in Zambia that Debra made the most significant decision of her life: adopting her son, Jack. She later called it “hands down, the best decision I ever made.” She embraced motherhood fully, finding immense joy in the everyday moments of Jack’s early life.
In 2008, Debra and Jack returned to Canada—first to Toronto, where she re-entered the telecommunications sector, and later to the Lower Mainland in 2012 to be closer to her extended family and support system. As Jack grew, Debra embraced the busy life of a solo mother, balancing work commitments, hockey practices, and dog walks, all while continuing to give back to her community.
In 2018, she made a meaningful career change and began teaching at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Douglas College, and Langara College. Debra thrived in the academic environment. She was passionate about sharing her knowledge, mentoring young people, and contributing to initiatives such as advancing Indigenous learning and supporting professional development. She was widely respected as a dedicated and outstanding educator, and an open and caring colleague.
Debra was known and loved for her quick wit, engaging stories, and generous heart. Among her many roles, she was a devoted mother, a favourite aunt, a caring daughter, a loyal friend, and a bright, loving presence in the lives of those around her. She always had a few books on the go, several knitting projects underway, and a deep love for conversation, good wine, and laughter shared with friends.
Of all her accomplishments, the role she cherished most was being Jack’s mom. Her love for him was boundless, and her hopes for his future were unwavering.
Debra is survived by her beloved son, Jack Pankratz; her parents, John and Laura Pankratz; her brother, Tim Pankratz (Momo); and her niece, Sophia Pankratz.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Debra’s wishes, donations may be made to Honoring Debra: a legacy of love, learning and laughter, supporting Jack’s future education, or to the Canadian Cancer Society in her memory (please find donation links below).
