Elizabeth "Thelma" (Chasty) Crothers

Thelma was born in Belfast, N. Ireland, to Henry and Annie Chasty (Thompson). 

She is predeceased by her daughter Lynne Ann (Obie), and her brother Harry Chasty. 

Thelma is survived by her loving daughter Karen (Colin). She also leaves behind, with great pride, her four grandchildren, David, D’Arcy, Kyle, Connor, and four great grandchildren, Cheyenne, Sariah, Tyler, and Avery. 

Thelma married William James Crothers in 1957, and immigrated to Canada, residing in Ontario until Jim’s passing in 1984, after 27 years of marriage. 

She graduated from Victoria College, Belfast, in 1948, and worked as a bookkeeper for most of her career. 

She was a lifelong volunteer with several organizations and volunteered with Girl Guides of Canada for over 35 years, ending her tenure as District Commissioner, where she made lifelong friends, including her best friend Eileen Barnes, who she missed dearly after her passing. 

Thelma was very proud when she became a Canadian Citizen in 1985. 

Thelma met Bertram Armstrong when she attended his niece Lori’s wedding in 1986 and moved to Ottawa to be with him. They shared a wonderful 10 years together before Bert’s passing in 1995. 

Thelma then settled in Alliston. She was very involved in St. Andrew Anglican Church and the ACW. This is where she met Clarence Smith, with whom she shared 20 years. They spent much of their time travelling together and really enjoyed going to Newfoundland several times over the years to spend time with family. They had many years of fun together until Clarence’s passing in 2020, at the age of 93. 

Her nieces Jill Ayling and Verity Lundy were wonderful at keeping her up to date on family matters in the UK. She was very grateful that they kept in touch. 

She was also extremely grateful for the love shown to her by Petra Smith, who treated her like her own mother. 

Respecting Thelma’s wishes, cremation has taken place. If so desired, memorial donations to St. Andrew Anglican Church Alliston, Ontario (link below) or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
