Goldie Springenatic, a trailblazer of food service and baseball in Surrey, passed away last week at the Langley care home where she lived the final years of her life. Goldie and her husband, Orest Springenatic, helped build Whalley Little League while operating the nearby Round Up Café, a landmark diner that closed after more than 60 years of business in 2021. The historic Goodmanson building still stands, located at 10449 King George Blvd. Goldie and Orest, who passed in 1995, met in the 1950s in Saskatchewan before they moved west to the town of Boston Bar in British Columbia. The couple proudly ran The Beanery restaurant before eventually settling in Surrey, where the couple raised their four children, Dennis (Sheila), Ted, Collette and Terry. The extraordinary matriarch of the Springenatic family, Goldie dedicated countless years to empowering Whalley Little League as she attended countless events, tournaments, and championships. She watched her own boys play in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, and later saw Dennis and Ted coach the Chiefs.
