Gualberto "Dods" Tecson Canete

Gualberto "Dods" Tecson Canete, age 82 passed away on December 25, 2023 in White Rock, BC due to congestive heart failure. He was 82. Born on November 14, 1941, in Cebu, Philippines to Hernando Sr. and Josefina Tecson Canete, it was apparent from a young age that he was gifted with musical talents in piano, guitar, and most notably, his golden vocals. As a teenager, he entered music festivals and crooned his way into a winning frenzy across at the Philippine islands in the 60s. He emigrated to Canada in 1967 to start a new life and family. With family members, he eventually led a band called at different times The Machetes or Manila that toured southern Ontario until the early 70s.

Dods was a courier for Purolator and the Health Ministry of Ontario before moving to Canada's west coast where he started his career of 24 years as a transit operator with BC Transit in Vancouver, BC. He retired in 2005. Creating cherished memories for his wife, children, and grandchildren, Dods shared the love of the great outdoors and the great Canadian camping tradition with his family and newly immigrated relatives. The Volkswagen Westfalia was his RV of choice when traveling along the coast and kept him busy at home, endlessly tinkering with the engines fine-tuning like his instruments. He was an avid amateur photographer, capturing a wealth of candid images of family, friends and the beloved Toronto Blue Jays. While he retired his lead singing role decades ago, music was always around him and his loved ones with spontaneous sing-a-longs at any given family gatherings accompanied by piano, guitar, or ukelele. His "dad joke" humour around the kitchen table or campfire will be missed for his laughter was infectious. His musical gifts and joyful spirit is a legacy for all that remember him.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Marie (Evans) Canete, married 45 years and their daughters Laura Beth Canete, Robin Leslie Bosnick and Son-in-Law Jonathan George Bosnick; He is pre-deceased by his first wife, Lisa Tomboc and survived by his eldest daughters Jan Beverly Canete and Josephine Anne Canete.

Also survived by his grandchildren [Raven (Rashad) Campbell, Sierra (Deedee) Bellamy, Victoria Mathis, and Mila Elizabeth and Samantha Jane Bosnick]; six great-grandchildren [Rashad, Rian, Reagan, and Reese Campbell; Drew Mianne Bellamy; and, Savanna James and Sean James III], and six siblings [Hernando Jr. (Maria Cecilia) Canete, Angelina (Francisco) Abad, Teresita Unabia, Leopold Canete, Eduardo Canete, and Galileo (Cynthia) Canete]. Pre-deceased by brother Jovito Canete.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew's Parish, 16079 88th Avenue, Surrey, BC, Canada, 604-589-2448, on Friday, January 5, 2024, 1:00 p.m. (Pacific Time).
