August 4, 1927 - April 6, 2022
Tom passed away at Royal City Manor in New Westminster, where he had lived for the past 18 months. He was previously a resident at Langley Gardens, and before that, lived with his wife Isobel (Rogers), at Queen Anne Green in Langley.
Son of Robert L. and Gladys (Madden) Hunter, Tom was born in Powell River. The family soon moved to Vancouver, where Tom went to school, prior to joining the Merchant Marine a few months before his 16th birthday. After serving on the Princess Adelaide, Tom headed to the Yukon, where he worked on the paddle wheeler, the SS Klondike. Later, he went to Art school in Vancouver and began working as a commercial artist for Woodward's. He and Isobel moved their growing family out to a small hobby farm in Aldergrove in 1962. There, the young man who'd grown up in Hastings East, fully embraced the country life. Commuting into Vancouver was arduous at that time, so Tom began work as a Prison Guard, and after earning his Bachelor of Arts at UBC, and working for a short stint as an Art teacher, he began his final career as a Probation Officer in Langley. Tom and Isobel loved travelling, and enjoyed trips to Europe, Australia and Africa, as well as exploring Canada and much of the USA. Throughout his life, pen and ink drawings were a passion for Tom. He was a regular contributor to BC Wildlife and BC Outdoors for many years, and produced a number of books featuring his drawings of Canadian wildlife. Tom's editorial cartoons were featured in the Langley Times for many years, using the pseudonym "Taughm".
Tom was predeceased by his wife Isobel in 2002. He is survived by his three children, Jane Tobin (Kevin), Elizabeth King (Tom), Jennifer Wilchuk (Steve); five grandchildren: Lindsay Tobin, Alicia Tobin (Bryan), Hunter Wilchuk, Griffin Wilchuk, and Sarah King (Dom). He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Kirk and numerous nephews and nieces.
At Tom's request, there will be no service. Those wishing to make a donation in his memory are encouraged to donate to either the Salvation Army or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialsurrey.com for the Hunter family.
