In Sept of 2017 Ila wrote this to me “I’m not very wise since I haven’t travelled this stage of life before”.  but this gave her comfort” The feeling remains that God is on this journey too. “. St. Teresa of Avila

I remember Ila today, and what first comes to my mind is her ability to laugh through aging!  I intend to honour her by trying to do the same. I miss her.

I've always admired Ila. She could do everything -- drive a farm truck and other jobs on the farm -- could cook and bake, sew, knit, quilt and be an outstanding nurse! Most of all, she was fun! I'm thankful for all she was and all she has done for our family, sharing the stories of our relatives and ancestors. I am so thankful to be her sister.

Ila was like a fine wine . . . she seemed to be getting better with age.  She was much more than just an Auntie to us.  She was a family elder, a teacher, a nurturer, a great listener, a raconteur and most importantly, a friend.  She always had time to see us, and we always left feeling better than when we arrived.  

Whether we were visiting her and staying at what we liked to call “The Victoria Hilton” . . . or just having a quick visit to get a Timmy’s coffee and a Canadian Maple doughnut (Ila’s and my favourite) she always had a way of making you feel important, cared-for and loved! . . . and we always had plenty of good laughs.  She led by example, with her “can-do” positive mental attitude, her love of family and great sense of humour .  .  .  and was an inspiration to those around her.  We will miss her very much!


Condolences to Allan, Melody and families on the passing of your Mom. I’ll never forget the short road trip I went on with your Mom back in 1997 between Kelowna and Vernon. She wanted to help me deal with the funeral director as we planned my Dad’s (her brother Murray’s) funeral. As we reminisced about Dad’s life, we came upon a number of ice fishers on the lake next to the road. We almost stopped to tell them, who were sitting on tiny stools just a few yards from open water, to get to a safer fishing spot! I’m sure if we would have had the time stop, Aunt ILA would have walked out to tell them get off that thin ice! Of course, she would have had no qualms about walking out on the thin ice herself to tell them so.  In any case, we pressed on to meet the funeral director, where she did most of the negotiating, since she knew considerably more about the funeral business than I, for which I was most thankful for. A memory I will always cherish about your Mom!

Thinking of Ila and the family this hour. Mom, Jan , and I will miss visiting with Ila. Attached is a photo of Mom and Ila in Menno when we were visiting. I can not remember what they were laughing about but it was probably something about the Moose Jaw days and the boys. Love from Jan and me

Ila, you were the nurse we all remember from many years ago.
You were with my mother after major surgery and we were comforted knowing she had the best there was. As a young girl afraid , you assured me that night,in your quiet way that she would look much better tomorrow...and she did. Thank you Ila.

Grandma Ila always made sure we were all well stocked with dish clothes and coasters that she had knit.   She will be missed by many.   Lots of fond and treasured memories!  Love and hugs for all she leaves behind.

I loved Ila.  She was so fun-loving with a great sense of humor.  I will always remember the night I slept on her couch and we laughed so hard when she shared memories of her childhood.  I visited her twice in Victoria and we toured the city.  I regret I didn't get time to spend with her in her later years.  What a woman!

I loved Ila !  She and I were  friends at church in Victoria and then we grew to be “good friends” 
Ila taught me how to grow old , and I am still using her model.  She once wrote me a phrase she liked and it represents her perfectly:
LIVE WELL,  LOVE MUCH,   LAUGH OFTEN

A fond memory of mine goes back to when I was about six years old and in the hospital to have my tonsils taken out. 

On the first night I was feeling rather abandoned and apprehensive, and Auntie Ila came to my bedside in the middle of the night and kept me company until I fell asleep. She spent a little time with me every night after that until I went home.
