Jeanette Evelyn McKinnon

Born Feb. 21, 1924, to Mike and Apolonia Wrubleski, Jeanette was the eighth of nine children raised on a mixed farm near Kuroki, Saskatchewan. After moving to Langley in 1940, Jeanette graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Victoria and worked as an emergency room nurse at St. Paul’s and several other hospitals.

Jeanette met her future husband, Stan McKinnon, at a dance organized by the Catholic Youth Organization and were married in 1951 at Langley’s St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They raised six children in Cloverdale, the home of the Surrey Leader where Stan was owner, editor and publisher. Jeanette also worked part-time at the Surrey Leader, spent time on church activities, including St. Theresa’s Circle and also the choir.

Following Stan’s retirement in 1984, Stan and Jeanette traveled widely with friends and family. She continued to travel with family after he died in 1996 while also enthusiastically indulging in hobbies, particularly bridge.

After living for 58 years in a home built on 172nd Street Surrey to accommodate their growing family, Jeanette moved to Bethshan Gardens in 2014 and transferred in early 2020 to The Residence at Morgan Heights. A special thank you is extended to all care-aides, nurses, administrators, and other staff who worked hard to ensure she was safe and well-cared for.

Jeanette is survived by Jeri and husband Terry; Mark and wife Birgit; Peter; Lorna and husband Brian; Kevin and partner Stacey; and Ian and wife Susan. In addition, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren enlivened the last decades of her life.

Jeanette was in her happy place when family members gathered at her Cloverdale home, “The Homestead” for food, conversation and games, however she lived in hope of resurrection with Jesus. Her beliefs sustained her through some difficult challenges; she kept the faith to the very end.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the TB Vets.
