Thank you.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Husband and Opa, Johan de Koning. On December 30th, 2020 he passed away peacefully at the age of 80 surrounded by his wife of 54 years and children at Melville Hospice in Surrey BC. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife Bonnie, children Jennifer and Roger, daughter in law Shelley, grandchildren Cora and Lucas, Bruno father of Lucas and his many family and friends.
Johan was born on March 17, 1940 to Johannes and Cornelia de Koning (Dijkgraaf) in Ouderkerk a/d Yssel, Netherlands. Loving brother to Kees (Cora), Maartin (Neeltje), Jo (Chris), Bep (Tinus), Truus (Piet), Cocky (Piet), brother in law to Don (Vicci), as well as Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
An avid seaman he started his career in the navy at the age of 18, moving over to the merchant marine on the Groote Beer with the Holland American Line shortly thereafter. It was during one of his trips in 1964 that he was rushed off the ship to Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver BC, where he met his future bride. Keeping in touch, she followed him back to Holland after he had another medical emergency in Costa Rica. They were engaged a few months later marrying in 1966. Excited for a new start, they moved back to Canada in 1968 where Johan completed his schooling at VVI and BCIT as a draftsperson. It was there, that he met his future business partner / life long friend and they started their own company, M-Tec Steel in 1979. They worked together along with their wives until their retirement in 2003.
Johan and Bonnie believed in kismet and were truly each other’s soul mates. During their marriage they raised their children with a lot of love and affection and were always active in their lives. He was extremely proud of their personal and professional accomplishments. Opa’s grandkids were the apple of his eye, always looking to make them laugh, handing out treats and offering snuggles in his big chair.
The de Koning’s were fortunate enough to have a lot of time together with good friends and family in Whistler, visiting family in Holland, and great memories on their sailboat. They also travelled extensively around the world with old and new friends. Many parties, luncheons and laughs were enjoyed over the years with great friends and neighbors in their home.
The family would like to thank the staff of Melville Hospice for their exceptional compassionate care of Johan during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Johan to the Melville Hospice Home, The Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
