Wayne was born April 21, 1936, in Winnipeg, MB, the son of Ross and Opal (Angus) McFarlane. The family moved to Lindell Beach, Cultus Lake, BC when he was a child. He graduated from Chilliwack High School then attended UBC where he studied languages and literature. Wayne met Jean (Reid) on Valentine’s Day at her family farm in Aldergrove, BC. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in hospice shortly before his passing. Wayne worked as Manager of three BC Liquor Stores: Whalley, Guildford and Cloverdale. He opened the Madeira Park, BC store with short stints in New Denver and Ashcroft. After his retirement Wayne and Jean went on a road trip, then settled part-time on Denman Island, BC.
Wayne's passions were literature, music, languages, and the outdoors. He taught himself music and composed under the pseudonym Ken McAfee on the internet; he was a valued contributor to the flat.io music platform. Wayne had an intellectual side, and loved to discuss his literary and musical discoveries with friends and family. He was a witty conversationalist, and was always ready with a pun. Amazingly, he remembered much of his language studies from UBC, and tried out his French, Spanish or German chops whenever there was an opportunity. Wayne also loved to make driftwood sculptures, on display at their Denman Island property.
Remaining to cherish Wayne's memory are his wife, Margaret Jean (Reid); their children, Gary , Leslie and Christine; son-in-law, Alan Ingham; grandchildren, Sarah and Jeremy Ingham; Gary’s partner, Jeffrey Rotin; and nephew, James McFarlane. Preceding Wayne in death is brother, Dr. James Ross McFarlane of Coquitlam and life-long friends, Dr. Michael Schultzer and David Somerville. He had friends and neighbours on Denman Island and in Surrey, BC where the family resided since 1972. He has extended family in Thunder Bay, ON and Manitoba.
