four siblings: Bev (Conroy), June (Frison), and Betty (Marshall). Les attended Templeton Secondary
School. After leaving High School, Les started working at Tryson Iron Works. He then bought himself
a 1948 Mercury Van, with which he went into business delivering parts around Vancouver. Les' interest
in cars led him to join the newly formed BC Custom Car Association in 1952, where he earned the
nickname 'Spider.'
In 1956, he married Shirley Keen, after dating for about 2 years, and they became engaged on
Valentine's Day. Les and Shirley bought their first home in East Vancouver in 1960, and lived there
until their move to Tsawwassen in 2011. They were married for sixty years – celebrating their
Diamond Anniversary on May 5th 2016. Les and Shirley had two delightful children, Sharon (1963)
and Brian (1969).
In 1959, Les began a new job at Eaton's, where he was employed for 34 years as a Delivery Driver.
During his employment at Eaton's he won multiple awards for his safe driving, which included: '1979
British Columbia Commercial Truck Driver of the Year' by Mac Trucks. Les was also inducted in the
Million-Mile Club – in honour of driving one million miles accident-free.
After retiring from Eaton's, Les decided to keep busy by working at Fine Arts Dental Lab as a Delivery
Driver, which earned him the nickname the 'Tooth Fairy.' Les' various hobbies included being a
member of the Vancouver Movie Club, and many years of volunteer work with the Citizens Crime
Watch with the Vancouver Police Department.
Les loved camping trips, many of which were with his immediate family, and several with his brotherin-
law Eddie Keen, to the Okanagan for their annual apple trip.
In 2003, Les was inducted into the Greater Vancouver Motor Sport Pioneer Society.
Les had an exceedingly generous nature, always willing to selflessly help others, and was usually first
to volunteer, when needed. He was a gentle, happy-go-lucky man and enjoyed visiting with family and
friends. Les would love playing cards in his leisure time. He was also an avid BC Lions fan and Season
Ticket Holder for 29 years, from their early years at BC Place until last season.
Les enjoyed the past few months of his life at Whitecliff Seniors Residence, in South Surrey, with his
wife, Shirley. He particularly enjoyed the food, socialising with the residents, in-house activities
(especially playing Black Jack) and outings on the Whitecliff Bus.
Les leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Shirley, his daughter Sharon (Dave) and son Brian (Margo), and
grandchildren Nicole, Michael and Chris. He is also survived by two of his older sisters, Bev and June.
Les is pre-deceased by his sister, Betty.
