Margaret Macaulay

Margaret passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at the age of 86 years at Surrey Memorial Hospital in Surrey, BC.

Born March 13, 1928 in Fort William, Ontario (Thunder Bay), Mom grew up on Amelia Street and made life-long friends wherever she lived. She married John Macaulay in 1948, living in the Winston Hall apartments until they moved to Vancouver’s west end in 1950 for eight years, followed by Edmonton in 1958 for 28 years, and finally retiring back to the west coast in 1986.

Like many suburban parents of her generation, Mom focused on raising her three boys throughout the fifties and sixties, even teaching organ and piano on the side to keep her love of art and design active. Determined to do more, she returned to school in the mid-seventies to complete an Executive Assistant course at Grant MacEwan Community College, eventually working at the College for the Director of the Division of Performing and Design Arts until 1986.

In addition to art and design, Mom really enjoyed cooking, baking, and travelling. Mom and Dad made memorable trips to Europe, including visits to relatives in Scotland, and the ever-popular summer family camping vacations throughout the sixties and seventies. Even in retirement, Mom and Dad would explore the west coast every year, from Sechelt to San Diego and back.

With her final trip complete, Mom will be greatly missed by her many friends and relatives from Ontario, Vancouver, Edmonton, and beyond, but especially by her children Ken (Aurora) of Surrey, BC; Colin (Rebecca) of London, ON; Murray of Edmonton, AB; her granddaughter Victoria of Surrey, BC; and her sister Allyson Sovereign (John) of Chilliwack, BC.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents Watson Gray (1975) and Pearl Charlton (1943), her husband John Macaulay (2003), and her sister Isabel Burkholder (2003).

A small private memorial will be held by family and friends. In lieu of flowers or cards, please enjoy your memories of Mom as much as we will continue to do so.
