Mary Louise Major was born on February 4th, 1923, the only child of Lt. Col. Garnet Harris and his wife Mary, in Bear River, Nova Scotia. Following completion of high school in Digby, NS, she received a stenographic diploma and worked at many jobs throughout her life using her shorthand and typing skills. She met Gerald Major while he was stationed in Nova Scotia and they were married in 1950. A career army officer, Gerry was posted in Germany for a year and then Vietnam for another term. During this time Louise lived and worked in Winnipeg, then moved to Rivers, Manitoba upon Gerry's return to Canada. During a second posting to Vietnam Louise worked for a law firm and lived in Calgary, Alberta. The couple retired to Victoria in the mid 1960's where Gerry started a second career as a social worker. Louise was an avid volunteer with the Royal Jubilee Hospital Auxiliary and an even more avid cat fancier, in clubs and competing in cat shows in the Pacific North West. Gerry's passion were his boats and friends at the Sidney North Saanichton Yacht Club.
Louise was predeceased by her husband in July 2004. She is survived by her step son Alan Major in New Westminster and her step grandsons Adam (and family in West Vancouver) and Brad (and family in Squamish). She passed away on Monday August 22 at the age of 99, another victim of dementia and the Covid virus. Her family want to remember her as the charming friend and grandma that she was, with a delightful sense of humour and zest for life in her day. There will be no service at her request.
