It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Wife, Mother & Sister Paulina Katharina Sherwin (Stefan). She passed away peacefully at the age of 78 on July 1, 2023. She is survived by her twin sister Paulette (Tom Vanderberg d.), her Husband Duncan, her 5 children and her 13 grandchildren, as follows: Christina her husband Steven Banick and their three daughters Kaitlin, Allison, and Samantha; Michael, his wife Emily and their three children Ruby, Leo & Henry; Michelle and her husband Bryce Dunlop; Christopher and his daughters Aurora and Sophia; Amy, her husband Todd Masuzumi and their five children Lucy, Cole, Molly, Drew & Luke. She was predeceased by her brothers Jacob (Judy), Arthur (Hilda), Edward (Gerdie), and John (d. Stella).
Pauline was an incredible Mom, who devoted her life to caring for her kids and her grandchildren. She was also a great confidante and friend to her children. Even when separated by distance from her adult children, she remained just a phone call away to offer advice, comfort and often just an ear to share our days. While she loved many things, her love of cats, flowers, and desserts remained throughout her whole life.
Pauline was raised on a farm outside of Westlock Alberta by her parents Jacob and Katharina (Schmidt). She learned to work hard by watching both her parents work every day to provide for their family. She spent hours with her sister Paulette and her Mom talking, doing chores and entertaining her older brothers. It was on the farm that she learned to can fruit, cook & bake which were skills she used raising her own family. In 1963, at the age of 18, Pauline and her sister moved to Edmonton to start their working careers.
Pauline and Duncan were married on May 8, 1971. They were sealed in the Cardston Alberta Temple for time and eternity in 1973 after Pauline had joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1972.
They spent the first 22 years of their married and family life in Edmonton, AB. The next 14 years were spent in Regina, SK and their retirement years have been spent in South Surrey, BC (with a brief stint back in Sherwood Park, AB).
Pauline had a 35+ year struggle with Multiple Sclerosis which slowly robbed her of her mobility but she never her lost her faith in God’s greater plan for her and her family.
A Memorial Service held in her honor will be held in British Columbia on August 18th at 2pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – 15450-20 Ave, Surrey, BC. A friends and family gathering will also be held in Edmonton, Alberta on a date yet to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of British Columbia would be welcome.
