The world grew quieter when Walter Blaschuk gently let go and passed away on his farm in Cloverdale, BC, on September 25, 2024. Born September 10,1935, in St. Boniface, MB, Walter was fondly known as Blasty, Dad, Uncle, Grandpa, and GG.
He touched many lives and shared his wisdom with those around him during his 35 years as a switchman with Canadian National Railway, while racing Standardbreds, camping and boating, coaching hockey, playing cards, and at KFC on Tuesdays.
Family meant everything to Walter. He flourished as Julia's eldest son and as brother to Dorothy (Cy), John (Blanche), and Rosemarie (Toby). After marrying Doreen Hedden in Vancouver in 1961, he embraced his roles and responsibilities as a husband and father. He loved the family he gained through marriage and the good times shared with his mother-in-law Edith and Doreen’s siblings John (Myrna) and Claire (Suzie).
He led by example to his two kids: Douglas Blaschuk, with wife Phyllis; and, Alison Cartier, with husband Curtis. He relished his role as a partner-in-crime to his many nieces and nephews and then to his grandchildren Robert (Kristina), Stephen (Breanne), Michelle (Graham), Jennifer (Travis), Brett (Ariel), Todd (Shayla), Lauryn, Nicole (Stuart), Michael, and Kevin (Melissa). The arrival of great-grandchildren Beaudyn, Walter, Elizabeth, Fredrik, Rori, Eastyn, Thomas, Sophie, & Miles kept the lessons rolling.
While we deeply miss him, we find comfort in thinking he is with those who left before him, including his mom, Julia; his wife, Doreen; siblings Dorothy and John; and in-laws Edith, John, Myrna, Claire, Cy, & Toby.
We will celebrate Walter's life with a funeral service and reception on October 16, at 10:00 a.m., at Victory Memorial Park, 14831 - 28 Ave., Surrey. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m., at Surrey Centre Cemetery, 16670 – 60 Ave.
