

Allan W. Stiles, age 87, of Swansea and Englewood, Florida, passed away, Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Sunset Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Venice, FL. He was the husband of Betty (Gilson) Stiles to whom he had been married for the past 64 years.
Born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, a son of the late Dwight and Louise (Sargent) Stiles, he had been a resident of Swansea since 1962. A graduate of Morgan Park High School in Chicago, class of 1947, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1952 from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
A Veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Korean War as Corporal. Mr. Stiles worked at FM Global for over 40 years retiring as Assistant Vice President of Administrative Services in 1993. An active member of the First Christian Congregational Church, he served in various capacities, including Treasurer, the Board of Trustees and the Board of Religious Education. He worked at the annual Autumn Fair for many years in the Country Store.
He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, and was the Scoutmaster of Troop 26 in Swansea for many years. He was a member of the Narragansett Council Executive Board, the Camp Cachalot Alumni Association, and a Fellow in the James E. West Society. He received several awards including the Silver Beaver in 1982 which is the highest award given to a volunteer.
Mr. Stiles volunteered at the Herreshoff Marine Museum and was past President of the Coles River Club. He was a lifetime member of the United States Power Squadrons. An avid sailor and swimmer, he loved being on the water, playing cribbage with friends, maintaining his vegetable garden, and cross-country skiing.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three children: Stephanie Eddleston and her husband Mark of Coventry, Rhode Island, Laura Stiles and her companion Richard Costello of Johnston, Rhode Island, Mark Stiles of Raynham, Massachusetts, one sister: Faye White and her husband Charles of Moline, Illinois, three grandchildren; Joshua, Justin, and Lindsay Stiles all of Milford, Massachusetts, and several nieces and nephews.
His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 11:00AM in the First Christian Congregational Church, 1113 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Friday from 4:00 to 7:00PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial tribute at Birchcrest, 189 Gardeners Neck Road, Swansea.
