
Born in Quincy, a son of the late John Garrity Sr. and Christina (Grinnell) Garrity, he lived in Tiverton and Somerset for many years and wintered in Hobe Sound, Florida.
A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, class of 1937, he attended Bryant College. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II as a Captain. He retired as the Executive Vice President of L.S. Chace and Son Inc. where he worked for many years. He was a longtime trustee of the former Fall River Savings Bank, a member of the bank’s investment committee, a Vice President, and retired as Chairman of the Board. Early in his business career he had been employed by the former Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of Fall River and Pacific Oil.
Mr. Garrity was a parishioner of Christ Church in Swansea where he was a former Vestryman and taught Sunday school. He was a member of the Advisory Board and Finance Committee of the Town of Somerset and a Member of the Board of the Family Service Association. He was a member of the Fall River Country Club where he was a former Board Member and Golf Chairman, and a member of the Eureka Lodge F & AM of Portsmouth, RI. He was involved in Somerset Little League and Boy Scouts.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons; John H. Garrity III of Newfields, NH, and Thomas R. Garrity of Dover, NH, Daughter-In-Law Reverend Susan E. Garrity of Dover, NH, two grandchildren; John T. Garrity and his wife Rachel of Hollis, NH and Ellen E. Foord and her husband Stefan of Dover, NH, two great-grandchildren; John Tyler Garrity and Elsa Emmaline Foord, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth O’Neil, Eleanor Elder, Helen Isherwood, and Elmer Garrity.
His private arrangements are in the care of the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Birchcrest, Swansea.
