

Born in the Azores, a son of the late Jose R. Sousa Sr. and Evangelina (Perry) Sousa, he came to the United States in 1914 living in Dighton for several years then Warren and Bristol before moving to Swansea in 1946.
Mr. Sousa worked for the Former Bristol Manufacturing – now Converse – for over 25 years, retiring in 1974. He was a communicant of St Dominic’s Church, a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II, and enjoyed gardening. He was a member of the William S. Greene Chapter 9 of the DAV.
Surviving: daughter – Veronica A. “Roni” Hewitt and her husband Gerald S. of Berkley, MA, son- Joseph R. “Sonny” Sousa of Swansea, sisters -Elsie Manchester of Warren, Evangelina “Angie” Avila of Onset, brothers- Jesse and John Souza both of Rehoboth, grandchildren – Joseph and his wife Jamie, Kyle, Chad Lisa Zucchero and her husband Joseph, Gerald and his wife Melia, Andrew and his wife Jennifer, Kenneth and Kathleen Flynn, great grandchildren Jack and Kaylin Flynn, Joey Sousa and Joshua Zucchero and many nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Mary Cardoza, Florence Alves, Laura Machowski, Frank Souza, Manuel Souza and Isabel Beaulieu.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 7:45 AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardners Neck Rd Swansea followed by a Funeral Mass at 9AM in St. Dominic’s Church, GAR Highway, Swansea. Visiting hours Monday 4-7PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bristol. Memorial contributions in his honor can be made to the Crestwood Nursing Home Activities Fund 568 Child St. Warren, RI. 02885.
