We, the family, regret to announce the passing of our dear aunt, Theresa Edwards. Theresa passed away peacefully at the age of 98 in Halifax, NS on September 1, 2023, one day after her birthday. Theresa was born in Sydney Mines, NS on August 31, 1925, and grew up on Crescent Street. She was the daughter of the late William James Edwards and the late Ellen Jane “Nellie,” “Bammie,” “Nannie” Edwards (nee Hurley).
After graduating from St F.X. University in Antigonish, NS, Theresa had a long and successful career with American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) beginning in Sydney. From there she was promoted to Atlanta, Georgia and then to Washington DC where she was a staff supervisor and continued the remainder of her career there. Upon retirement, Theresa moved to Norcross, Georgia, where she spent many years in the company of her numerous friends and wonderful neighbours. Theresa’s last move was to Halifax, Nova Scotia where she spent her final years.
In addition to her parents, Theresa was predeceased by her brothers: Edgar, Joseph “Jody,” (Rose), Russell, Judge Louis B. Edwards (Cecelia), Harold (Eleanor), and her only sister and very best friend, Anna (George) Petite. Theresa was the last surviving member of her family. She will be affectionately remembered by her many nieces and nephews living in Canada and the US, as well as several grand nieces and grand nephews.
Theresa always enjoyed traveling to be with her family which was spread from Sydney to Halifax to Vancouver to New Jersey, but her favourite trip of all was returning to the home of her heart, Cape Breton.
Theresa was always instrumental in supporting family members and the family will remember her as a thoughtful, fun-loving and extremely generous woman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11am on Wednesday, Sep. 13 at Holy Family Church Sydney Mines. She will be interred with her parents and two of her brothers at St Mary’s Cemetery on Shore Road in Sydney Mines not far from her childhood home. “There was someone I loved who grew old and ill
One by one I watched the fires go out.
There was nothing I could do
except to remember
that we receive
then we give back.” – Mary Oliver
