

Wife, sister and aunt, Annie was the daughter of Jobe and Lily Abbass. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on Oct. 2, 1924 and passed away on July 23, 2025 at the age of 100 years and nine months. Annie was raised and educated in Sydney. From a young age, Annie was a very creative and gifted person. Her many talents were put to excellent use throughout her long and productive life. She was among the earliest members of the Cape Breton School of Crafts and participated in the various aspects of the school, as Quilter, Rug Hooker, painter. Her works of arts and crafts attest to her talent and creativity. Her painting of the Sydney Steel Worker is treasured at the School of Crafts, while that of the Cape Breton Coal Miner was presented to the New Waterford Colliery Museum. She also was a gifted seamstress and designer. During the war she served in the Red Cross, was a cub leader and CYO member. She was also a member of the Daughters of Mary and a life member of the CWL. Annie was a long time member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish.
During her long and productive life she was active in the art community, even participating in a musical production "The Sweetest Girl in Town" at the Lyceum Theatre. Annie began her working life with Imperial Oil Ltd., but for over thirty years was the first contact for customers with Abbass Studios, always present at the front desk to greet and serve them. Annie was predeceased by her husband, Peter Hashem, her parents and nine siblings, Joseph(Annie), Philomena Hanna (Peter), Ferris(Helen), George(Irma), John(Monie), Mary MacDonald(Malcom), Anthony(Barbara),Father Frank Abbass, Katherine Huskey(Don). She is survived by Sister Simone Abbass and her brother Cyril (Susan) and three generations of nieces and nephews. Always one to speak her mind, to give loving advice and share a kind word and a candy . A leader in her large extended family and among her friends, Annie will be missed. For the last five years Annie resided at Parkland Cape Breton where she was an endeared and vital part of that retirement community. We are grateful to the staff of Parkland for the care received for the past number of years. Annie appreciated the care and attention she received in the sunset of her life from her family friends and relatives. We also wish to express gratitude to the Doctors and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital 3A, An Cala and Hospice Cape Breton, as well as her family physicians, Dr. Cohen and Dr. Hodson.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, July 27, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at TW Curry Parkview Chapel with the funeral Mass at 12:00 pm at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River on Monday, July 28th followed by a reception at the Parish Hall.
