We regretfully announce the passing of our cherished wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, godmother, and colleague, Crista Michelle Currie (nee Conn), 55, on February 27th, 2024. A beautiful light was dimmed when the most sincerely kind, generous, brave, and beloved person to all who knew her closed her eyes. She was comforted by the outpouring of love from the many friends and family who were by her side throughout her journey.
Crista was born to Mary Eileen (nee Boudreau) and Joseph Francis Conn in 1968 and grew up ‘living the dream’ on Grand Lake Road with her siblings, Patsy (Patricia), Dennis, Judy, Allan, and Kevin. Her dearest cousin Shauna Lee and friend Joy were there by her side then and throughout her life. When she was seventeen, she met the love of her life, Johnny, and they remained undeniable soulmates. Crista’s comfort, care, and love will be greatly missed by her daughter, whom she adored, Leanna. Crista’s family meant the world to her, and her greatest love was when, “we would all get together”. Moreso, Crista loved getting everyone together; she was the glue for both her family and wide circle of friends.
Crista made time for everyone in her life to listen, talk, and guide them through both good and bad times. Her genuine smile and calming nature brought those in her life both peace and joy. Crista had a passion for music and celebration, greatly influenced by her mom, Eileen, who she lost to cancer when only 11 years old. She played in the CCB (Crista Currie Band) with great friends, Jamie, Emile, and Rodney. They lovingly called her the ‘Boss”. Entertaining at parties and playing at benefits for families in our community was very important to her.
Crista and Johnny have been best friends since they started dating and after 33 years of marriage this friendship and love only grew stronger and unbreakable. Their path first took them to Ontario where they spent many years working and celebrating with family and friends, from Eaglewood to Coppersmith, and a few places in between. They returned to Cape Breton in 1995 with Leanna Jolene in tow. They set up in MacAdam’s Lake, developing deep roots in the country community. It was a rare visit to Crista and Johnny’s when you found yourself alone, the yard was always full of neighbours and family dropping by. Crista always welcoming, enjoyed every visit.
Crista was a loving and devoted mother to her daughter, Leanna Jolene, her pride and joy. Leanna had a bond so strong with her mumsy, that she will forever be held up by her spirit.
Upon return to Cape Breton, Crista worked for various organizations including manager at the North Sydney Mall, administration for Pit Pony productions, and several others until she found her home away from home at the Sydney Credit Union. Crista worked as a loan officer and was the consummate professional in her duties, a respected and trusted colleague and friend. Their workplace, their community, too, feels her absence with heavy hearts.
Her family and friends will forever keep her joyful spirit alive; her MacAdam’s Lake family, the Currie’s, her Grand Lake family, the Conn’s have all lost our special angel. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Allan, whom she spoke of with great warmth and love; they get to be with her now.
Cremation has taken place. Her funeral will be held at St. Mary’s Church in East Bay at 10am on Saturday, March 9th with Fr. Anthony O'Connor officiating. There will be a reception directly following at the East Bay Firehall. As Crista would say, everyone is welcome! There is no visitation prior to the funeral mass, however a sold-out celebration of Crista’s life will take place that evening at the Westmount Legion.
Everyone who knew Crista felt her big heart and giving nature, and although she was taken too soon, her beautiful light will be carried on by all who cherished her.
For those who cannot attend, the service will be livestreamed by visiting Crista’s online obituary page at
