“My heart’s in the Highlands. My heart is not here… My heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go” R. Burns
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our father, Donald, on October 31st, 2014. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Clara (Edwards) MacKenzie.
He is survived by son Robert (Colleen) and their sons Kaden and Braedy of Albert Bridge, daughter Heather (Andy Lee) and their children Olivia, Connor and Kaitlyn of Ottawa, daughter Jennifer (Don Lindsay) and their daughter Sienna of Vancouver and son Sandy (Cathy) and their children Davis, Kara and Cole of Albert Bridge.
He is also survived by sisters Catherine (George) Thurtle of Guelph and Clara MacKenzie of Sydney and brother George (Judy) of Mira Gut as well as many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law, Allister MacKenzie.
Donald completed his medical training at Dalhousie University and McGill University where he specialized in internal medicine before returning to Cape Breton. He was affectionately known as “D.E.” to his nursing and physician colleagues who described him as an exceptional clinician, a consummate professional and a true gentleman. His devotion to his patients’ care and bedside manner was exemplary.
He spent much of his younger life in Mira Gut and subsequently Albert Bridge where he raised his family. He enjoyed travel, camping, gardening, horses and boating.
At his request, there will be no visitation. Cremation will take place with a private family burial at a later date. Memorial donations in honor of his friendship and professional life may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.twcurry.com.
We are very appreciative of the care he received from the nurses and staff of 4B, 3B and the palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Murdock Smith.
Donald was a dedicated physician, a generous friend and a loving brother and father. His memory will carry on with us all.
