It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother Geraldine Mary (Penny) MacKinnon,92 on January 1, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family. Geraldine was the eldest daughter of the late Philip and Agnes (Tibbo) Penny. She was born in English Harbour West NF on January 2, 1927. At a young age she moved with her family to Whitney Pier, Sydney NS, where she lived happily all her life. Gerry attended Holy Redeemer School and was a very devoted member of Holy Redeemer Parish. She loved visitors and having long chats. Her memory was impeccable and she always had a beautiful or funny story about her young life in her precious English Harbour West NF. She told captivating stories about her teen years in Whitney Pier during World War II. She could tell a story as though she was writing a novel. Mom loved her “fashions” and enjoyed getting dressed up for family events and Saturday Mass.Mom was married to our kind and loving Dad, Bernie for 62 years before he passed away in 2009. She was a devoted, beautiful mother to all of her children and she will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed. Gerry is survived by her children; son Lorne (Linda), Sydney; daughter Brenda (Michael) MacDonald, Halifax; Barbara (Michael) Kennedy; Cheryl (Bill) Neville, all of Sydney; sisters Kathleen (Kay) Jamael, Sydney; Marina Newman, North Sydney; Shirley (Walter) Wojeck, Sydney and brother Phil (Deborah) Penny, Sydney; 10 beloved grandchildren; Lorne (Patricia), Krista (Lorne), Karen (Mike), Christina (Nick), Laura, Bhreagh (Carson), Deanna (Michael), Nicole (Justin), Andrew (Brianne) and Shaun, 11 great-grandchildren; Skye, Stirling, Scotia, Shianne, Alex, Amelia, Cate, Caroline, Sofie, Jax and Madelyn.
