

Hazel was born in Sydney, NS on March 6, 1931, the only daughter of the late Pierce and Elizabeth (Colbert) Power. She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1952 and made First Vows in 1954.
Sister Hazel’s life and her loving commitment to God was expressed through her life of mission and service within the Congregation of Notre Dame. Hazel’s career in the field of education spanned thirty-eight years as teacher, librarian and administrator in various Sydney schools.
Following retirement, she ministered at the CND Health Care Center as coordinator for the next fifteen years. She also served on the Board of Directors for the MacGillivray Guest Home and was a valued member of the Friends of MacGillivray.
In 2011, Sister Hazel moved to Parkland Cape Breton where she enjoyed meeting many new folks. She spent the last months of her life at the CND Health Care Center where she focused on intercessory prayer and personal presence.
Throughout her life, Sister Hazel maintained a genuine interest in others, be it family, students, CNDs or friends. She made it her priority to be an advocate for the elderly and those on the peripheries. Her commitment to the wellbeing of others was a testament to God’s tender care and her faithfulness.
Sister Hazel is survived by her devoted nieces, nephews and their families whom she cherished. She was predeceased by brothers Walter, Bill (Nora) and Greg (Hattie).
Visitation will be held 5 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1 at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel with a prayer vigil at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m, on Wednesday, April 2 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery. Sydney Forks, NS in the spring.
