Born on July 5, 1961, Jackie was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Knockwood and Isaac Francis Knockwood. She was a proud Mi’kmaw woman who spent most of her life in Eskasoni after her younger years of living in Boston. She was fluent in the Mi’kmaw language and carried strong pride in her culture. Her Catholic faith was also very important to her, and she found comfort in prayer throughout her life.
Jackie was known for her incredible strength. She faced many health challenges throughout her life, yet continued to carry herself with a strength that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. No matter what she was going through, she kept going. Her resilience, courage, and will to push through were deeply admired, and she inspired many people by the way she lived her life.
She spent many years working at the Processing Plant with Crane Cove Seafoods. In the summers, she loved traveling to Maine for blueberry picking. Even when her body made it difficult, she still found her way there. Jackie enjoyed the simple things in life. She loved her daily Tim Hortons coffee, going for drives, and making her regular trips into “town” in Sydney for shopping. She was a big fan of the Boston Bruins, loved the color turquoise, and always wore her gold jewelry.
More than anything, Jackie loved her family. She cherished time spent with her daughters, siblings, grandchildren, great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, and friends, who all meant everything to her. She loved them deeply and always held them close to her heart.
Jackie is survived by her daughters, Margaret Knockwood (Heriberto), Shelly Stevens (Dito), and special daughter Martine Gould. She leaves behind her grandchildren, Edmund Jay Morris, Jaylyn Morris (her “Sonny boy” Cameron), Anjelikah Stevens (Michael), Danikah Stevens, August Christmas, Bronson Stevens, and Aaron Christmas Jr., and her one and only great-grandchild, Annayah Stevens.
She is also survived by her siblings, Irene Knockwood, Theresa Knockwood, Norma Knockwood, Georgina Knockwood, Ivan Knockwood, Samuel Knockwood, Cheryl Ann Knockwood (Holly), Mary Jane Stevens, Joe Paul (Yvonne), Roddie Marble, and Dianna Pippin (Frank), along with her siblings-in-law, her uncle Roderick Knockwood (Theresa), her godchildren Shona Stevens, Ted Knockwood (Cindel), and Vincent Ji’j (Jenna), many nieces and nephews, extended family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.
Jackie was predeceased by her beloved wife of 35 years, Martha Veronica “Veron” Stevens; her parents; her special daughter, Michelle Murphy “Pumba”; her siblings Margaret Cooper, Jean Paul, and Isaac Joe Knockwood; and her granddaughter, Judith Johnson. Jackie deeply missed her wife over the years, and the family finds comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, April 9, at her home, 31 Burdock Lane, Eskasoni until the Funeral Mass which will be held on Saturday, April 11, at the Holy Family Parish in Eskasoni.
The family would like to send their love and thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital who cared for Jackie during the day of her passing.
The family would also like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time. The family takes comfort in knowing Jackie is now at peace. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at twcurry.com.
