Born October 1st, 1928, in the district of Paddington, London, England, the only child of the late William John Anstey and Bertha Rosine (Watson) Anstey.
John is survived by his children Grant (Caroline), Marlene (Steven) Gavel, Sharon Clossin, Michelle (Tony Antle), and his Grandchildren Bradley, Kristopher, Jayson,
Jordan, and Shannon.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife Florence (Burt), daughter Lauren Rosine, grandchildren David (Ball), and Natasha Anstey.
John began his marine career in Southampton England; he spent the early years on coal and bulk ships that had him travel the world earning his tickets. Those trips included convoys from Sydney harbour to Britain and back. Meeting, marrying and creating a family and home with Florence settled him in Cape Breton. During his early years here, he worked at the Sydney Steel Plant, Pyro-minerals and Sydney Landscaping. His marine life continued, working for Atlantic Towing on the tugs for many years before switching to the Atlantic Pilotage Authority, ending his career close to home in North Sydney. Every ship he sailed was his favorite. There was something fresh to experience from each one.
The invitation to join the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association meant the world to him. Although he did not serve on warships, the recognition of the important role of the merchant fleet and the validation of the bravery it took to sail the seas unarmed at that time solidified his camaraderie in the group. His last days were filled with pride at having been able to represent Merchant Naval Vets, one last time, at the Battle of the Atlantic ceremony on May 4th of this year.
John was a lifetime member of Breton Traditional Archers; he loved to shoot and loved bringing new people to the sport. He was a proud father and uncle, builder, gardener, reader, explorer, fixer, king of the jig, and lover of dogs.
Cremation has taken place, and internment will be held at Alfred Smith Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will take place at TW Curry's Funeral Chapel, George St. Sydney, 2pm-3:30pm and a service following at 3:30 pm, Thursday June 19th, 2025.
Memorial donations can be made in his Memory to the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association.
