87 – Sydney River
Kathleen Sarah Verner, age 87 of Sydney River, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, June 9, 2015.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm O’Connell and Christine (O’Keefe) O’Connell.
Kathleen graduated from Saint Joseph’s Hospital, School of Nursing in Glace Bay (X-Ray Technician) and worked at Point Edward Hospital prior to her marriage to Earl Verner.
Kathleen was an active 50 year member of the C.W.L. of Our Lady of Fatima Parish who loved singing in the choir, and along with other members of the CWL, created beautiful church banners that now hang on the church walls.
Her creative nature was with her from the start. She was an artist, interior decorator, she refinished furniture and, most remarkably, designed and made the most beautiful clothes. The most well-known of her creations are the scarves she made to be given as gifts of friendship to those who entered her life.
Above all, Kathleen was an incredible loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her kindness was constant and she always put her family’s well-being first.
She has been and will always remain an inspiration of kindness, humility, strength and determination for her family and friends.
Kathleen is survived by her sons Gregory and Geoffrey (Colleen) and daughters Estelle Janega (Rick) and Regis Verner; grandchildren Daniel Verner, Ryne Kingsbury, Austin Janega, Avery (Janega) Mossop and Hannah Janega; and one great grand-daughter, Adelaide Kathleen; sisters Mary Gallant and Leone Campbell (Don).
Earl Verner, Kathleen’s husband for 56 years, predeceased her in 2008. Kathleen is also predeceased by her brother Kevin O’Connell and sister Regis (O’Connell) MacLennan.
Visitation will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George Street, Sydney, Nova Scotia, on Friday, June 12, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 13, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, Nova Scotia with Father Devereaux officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall.
Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Parish cemetery, East Bay, Nova Scotia.
