Sr. Margaret Hawrylak

Sydney

Sister Margaret Hawrylak (Sr. St. Gregory) a sister of the Congregation of Notre Dame, died peacefully at the CND Health Care Center on Friday June 5, 2020, after a long and well-lived life.

Sr. Margie was born in 1933, the third daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann (Black) Hawrylak of Whitney Pier.

After graduation from high school, Margie felt a call to religious life. In 1951, she entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in Montreal.

Following her religious profession in 1953 Margie returned to Sydney and devoted the next twenty-eight years to the education of elementary school children in Sydney, Charlos Cove, Judique, Sydney Mines and Tignish, P.E.I. Teaching young children was a real joy for Sr. Margie.

Following her teaching career Margie responded to several new ministries within the Congregation; she served in leadership in Inverness, and later, was part of the CND formation team in Lanark. For several years following these ministries, Margie took time to care for her ailing mother during the last years of her life.

Sr. Margie’s next move was to British Columbia, where she deeply cherished the five years she spent with the Shuswap First Nations People in Canim Lake.

Upon returning to Cape Breton, she resided at Holy Redeemer Convent until she moved to Parkland Cape Breton in 2012, and later to the CND Health Care Centre. The family is deeply grateful to the staff at the Centre for the kindness and loving care they showed Sr. Margie during her time with them.

Besides her parents, Sr. Margie was predeceased by sisters Kaye Boutillier and Rose MacNeil, brothers Mike, Tony, and Robert who died in infancy.

She will be greatly missed by her sister Elaine CND, her brothers Greg (Carol), John (Linda), Joe (Lee) and sister-in-law Colleen Hawrylak.

Sr. Margie is also survived by a large extended family of nieces and nephews.

In keeping with the present restrictions, a private service will be held for immediate family.
