

Sutherland, Regina Elizabeth – 88, of Sydney passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in her home at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax. Regina was born to John and Mary Olivia (Putt) Power in Sydney, N.S. the fourth of eight children. Regina grew up and lived in Sydney most of her life, moving to Halifax in 2008 to be closer to family. She was a school teacher for 38 years. After graduating from Provincial Normal College, Truro, she began teaching in North Sydney at the age of 19 with 55 students from primary to grade 3. In 1979, she took a sabbatical to complete her years of study, leading to her B.A. and B.Ed. degrees from Saint Francis Xavier University. She ended her teaching career at Sheriff Jr. High, Sydney. Regina had a strong faith in God and was a life-long member of Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, Sydney. She also had a great sense of volunteering – evident by her involvement in the Catholic Women’s League (Holy Redeemer Parish), Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), and other charitable organizations. As well, she was involved in various community groups such as the local Bridge Club, Book Club, CFUW Investment Club, and Lingan Golf and Country Club. She is survived by her loving children Susan (Kurt) Pyle, Dartmouth; Laura (Francois) Lemire, Ottawa; and Stephen (Christine), Halifax; her grandchildren Paul, Rebecca, Matthew, Olivia, Terence and Alexander; surviving is a sister Leola Leck, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, the love of her life and best friend, John Francis Sutherland; brothers Rev. Father Terence Power and John Power; sisters Mary MacIsaac, Florence Langille, Lucille Power and Helene Moss. Cremation has taken place under the care of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will take place 11:00 am October 21, 2013 in Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, Sydney. Following the funeral service, a reception will be held in the church and burial at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Special thank you to the staff of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home and We Care for their compassionate care shown towards our mother during her stay.
