It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rose Marie “Dolly” Desmond age 70 of Whitney Pier.
After a long battle with cancer, Dolly passed away peacefully on March 13, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her loving husband Joe and family by her side.
Born in Sydney on Sept. 17, 1949. She was the daughter of the late Marie Colleen (Byrne) and Joseph Sylvester DelVecchio.
Dolly is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 45 years, Joe Desmond. She was a loving mother to son, Joey (Lillyann) and daughter, Renita (Johnnie). Dolly was a proud grandmother to Tegan and Joshua, Joey’s children and Kevin (Desiree) and Hailley, Renita’s children. She is survived by sisters, Theresa Russell, Sherry (Russell) Fitzgerald, Joan (Michael) Lahey and Shirley DelVecchio; brothers, James (Carol), Johnny, Eddie and Billy DelVecchio; godchildren who were dear to her heart, Donald Alleyne (his children Justin and Dylan) and Meranda Fitzgerald (Bullen). She leaves behind her lifelong friend Diane Alleyne, they had spent many days enjoying each other’s company, while watching afternoon soaps, eating sweets and having a good cup of tea. She was a proud sponsor of a young boy from Africa named Asima Denis. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
She was predeceased by brother, Joseph DelVecchio.
Dolly worked for over 35 years for Shannex Corporation as a housekeeper. During her time there she made many friends with the residents and other staff members. Dolly’s family meant the world to her, and she to them. She had a heart of gold. Her kindness and thoughtful ways touched the lives of many, and she will be deeply missed.
“You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide. Although we cannot see you, we know you’re always by our side.”
Visitation for Dolly, will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18 also at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Fr. Paul Murphy will officiate. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. A reception will follow the service at the Menelik Hall Community Center, Whitney Pier.
Donations in memory of Dolly may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
