It is with great sadness the family of Stella Farrell, age 94, announce her passing on October 31st, 2022, peacefully and surrounded by family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital palliative care unit.
Stella Mary Farrell (née McEachern) was born in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia on August 22, 1928. She was the daughter of Leo B. McEachern and Elizabeth Mary (Power) McEachern.
Stella graduated from the Provincial Normal School, Truro, in 1947 and taught in schools in Antigonish County and Cape Breton County, as well as the former St. Joseph’s school in Sydney. Stella and her husband of 59 years, Aubrey, raised their children in the North End of Sydney, where Stella was active in her community. She was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, and 65-year member of the Catholic Women’s League. The family enjoyed many summers marked by long road trips spent exploring locations across Canada and the US. Aubrey and Stella continued the tradition throughout their lives, travelling often to visit family in Calgary. Stella was an avid bridge player for many years and most recently enjoyed knitting hats for newborns with the knitting group at the McConnell library.
Stella is survived by her seven children: Brendon (Dawn), Elizabeth (Gord) Goodwin, Cynthia (Richard) Campbell, Martha (Ken) MacRae, Lyndon (Nancy), Rosemary (Gary) East, Alice (James) MacLellan; grandchildren Kira (Jon) Simons, Jessica (Chris) Farrell; Shona (Scott), Lyndon, Brett and Patrick Goodwin; John (Julia), Emily, Anna, and Stephanie Campbell; Elizabeth, Eric (Barbara) and Alexandra (Andy) MacRae, Mary Ann, Aubrey, Kate, and Lilly Farrell; Isabelle, Iris, and Ian East; Allistair, Beth, Owen (Hanna), Caroline, and Fiona MacLellan; great-grandchildren Julia, Jack, Declan and Ava Simons, William and Sarah MacRae, Isla and Ivy MacLean, Lyle MacLellan, and Henry Campbell.
Stella is also survived by her three sisters: Winnie Belliveau of Moncton, and Elinor Gromick and Peggy (Ricky) MacDonald of Dartmouth. She was predeceased by her three brothers Hugh, Desmond, and Walter, her older sister Anne MacLeod, grandson Daniel James East and her loving husband Aubrey P. Farrell (2016).
The family would like to thank Dr. John Archibald and his office manager, Debbie Delaney, Dr. Paul MacDonald, Dr. Gordon Yeung, and Dr. David McFarlane, as well as the palliative staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their attentive care. Thank you also to the community, staff and Stella’s many friends at Parkland. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa’s Church on Monday, November 7th at 11a.m. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. A reception will be held at 1pm, at the Trio restaurant in the Cambridge Suites Hotel in Sydney, all are welcome. For those who wish, donations may be made to Mass for Shut-ins.
