September 7, 1937 - April 21, 2025
We are sad to say that our father, Vincent Omer MacNeil, fondly known as Vink, has died. He was the son of Stephen Lawrence and Helen Celeste MacNeil. Married for 53 years, Dad was a devoted husband to our mother, Etta (Frioult) and the proud father of the four of us: Celia Marie (Patrick O’Shea), Douglas (Debra Boutilier), Frances (Steven Allan), and Sharon (Paul Anderson).
Dad shared an extraordinary love with his two granddaughters, Erica (Isaiah Harris) and Rachel Allan, who lit up his life. Their time together was filled with laughter, warmth, and moments they will cherish forever. From truck drives and wagon rides to whale watching, ice cream, and card games, what they had was rare and beautiful.
Through Sharon‘s marriage to Paul, Blake and Wade joined our family, and Celia‘s marriage to Paddy added Katelyn, who Dad had known since she was a little girl.
Dad grew up in Sydney’s north end, the fifth of eight children. He was predeceased by his parents, his eldest sister Betty (Robert-deceased) Nicholson and two brothers Frank (Dolly) and Allister (Norma). He is survived by his sister Mary (Dr. Frank-deceased) Shea, and brothers Dugga (Florence-deceased), Hayes (Elaine), Elwin (Jane), beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
“Family First” was his motto and Dad dedicated his life to us. We were his purpose. Every decision was made around the question, how will this affect our family? He loved us with all his heart and he was the most reliable person we knew. Anytime, anywhere, all we had to do was phone and he’d be there; no questions asked.
His work life centred around the CNR, Via Rail, and Marine Atlantic. Dad fulfilled his civic duty when he served for years as an alderman for Ward 1 (the north end) in the former City of Sydney. For his dedicated service, dad was awarded an honorary “Key to the City”.
Dad loved to have fun. He had a great singing voice and near encyclopedic memory for song lyrics. Known for his quick wit, great sense of humor, and sparkling smile, dad could light up a room. He loved a good joke or prank, was a brilliant storyteller, and was always up for a game of cards. Dad was a hockey nut, and he watched his favourite teams religiously.
Big Pond was a second home for Dad and our extended family. Dad’s favourite place was sitting on the deck, watching the sun set over the Bras d’Or Lake, enjoying a drink of rum and Pepsi. He and Mom loved their life in Big Pond, and they loved the community they became a part of while living there. When winter arrived, for many years they’d flee to the south, enjoying every minute they spent out of the cold together.
Although we are heartbroken, we are also at peace, knowing that dad died as he lived, with dignity and grace and a strong faith in God. We are happy he is reunited with Mom, his great love, and with all his family and friends who went before him.
Dad leaves behind a legacy of family, filled with kindness, laughter, and love. A legacy we will continue in his honor. Our memories will hold us close in the days to come and we will be wrapped in his love until we take our last breath. He made our world a better place and we will miss him .
Visitation will take place at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George Street, on Tuesday, April 29, 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00. The funeral mass will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys church, 40 Cabot Street, on Wednesday, April 30, 11:00.
Dad read the obituaries every day. We hope we have done him proud with this one. May he rest in peace
