Pell City, AL - Charline Taylor Murphy, age 98, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday November 9, 2021 surrounded by her children.
She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on September 9, 1923, the daughter of the late Mary Durham Taylor and the late Charlie Taylor. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Walker and her husband Gene, and Marilyn Aldridge.
Charline grew up in the West End section of Birmingham and graduated from West End High School in 1941. She graduated from Alabama College (University of Montevallo) in 1945 with a B. S. degree in Home Economics. Following graduation she went to work at the Baptist Hospital of New Orleans, Louisiana as a dietician, working there from 1946-1948. Charline returned home to Birmingham in 1949 and worked as a dietician for the Jefferson-Hillman Hospital (U.A.B. Medical Center).
In 1950 Charline married Frank Murphy, Sr. at Pikes Road Baptist Church, and they moved to Clanton, Alabama. After two years they moved back to Birmingham and shortly after began raising a family. In December of 1954 the family moved from Birmingham to Sylacauga, Alabama, where they joined the First Baptist Church of Sylacauga. She has been a member of the church for 67 years, serving in a number of capacities. Apart from raising five children she also worked for a time at the Mark Linder Elementary School in Sycamore, Alabama as a 5th grade teacher and later as a Teacher’s Aide in the Special Education Program of the Sylacauga City School System.
By far her greatest joy was her family. She was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren, and always spoke of them lovingly and hopefully. She is survived by her five children, David Murphy (Phyllis) of Pell City, Frank Murphy of Rome, Georgia, Paul Murphy (Debbie) of Winfield, Martha Jenkins (Larry) of Prattville, and Walt Murphy (Casey) of Loxley. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother George Taylor of Tuscaloosa and 3 Nieces and 3 Nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Village at Cook Springs Assisted Living and Nursing Home for their care over the past four and a half years. We would also like to thank the members of our Mother’s Sunday School class, the Lydia Sunday School class at FBC of Sylacauga for support and encouragement. We would also like to thank the members of the Faith and Charity Class at FBC of Pell City for adopting her as one of their own after moving to Cook Springs.
The family would like to say a special thank you to three special friends of our Mother, Nita Dark, Elaine Mitchum, and Martha Tyler. Your friendship, support, and time together enriched our Mother’s life immensely in her later years.
The funeral service will take place on Friday November 12 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Sylacauga with Dr. Rick Patrick officiating. A family time of visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by visitation by family and friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Her grandsons will serve as Pall bearers following the service.
In lieu of flowers the family is encouraging those who wish to make a donation to the Missions First Fund at First Baptist Church of Sylacauga.
