Cornelia “Lia” Biscoe – den Braber, age 64, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 in Sylacauga, AL. Born in the Netherlands, she moved with her family to Redondo Beach, CA in 1965. A resident of Southern California for 52 years, Lia graduated from Redondo Union High School and attended both Pierce College and Cal Lutheran University. In 1982, she began a 34yr career with Xerox in the Software Development Dept, collaborating with colleagues whose friendships would last a lifetime.
Lia’s favorite past time was her Arts and Crafts. She became a member of the National Society of Tole and Decorative Painters, earning a Certified Decorative Artist certificate and held the position of Treasurer of the NSTDP. She taught decorative painting and calligraphy at Torrance and Rolling Hills Adult Ed as well as Art Colony 1 in San Pedro, and for co-workers at lunchtime. Lia also caught the Scrapbooking bug and joined Club Scrap, as well as joining a group of ladies at Scrapbook Oasis and West Coast Scrappers.
In 2017 Lia moved to Alabama to be near her family, accepting a position with TJ Maxx, she built a home on Lay Lake, and had every intention of teaching crafts in her home. She never realized that goal, however because she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2018. Lia never had any regrets and accepted her illness with hope and bravery.
A true social butterfly, Lia loved life, loved to laugh, and loved her family, friends, colleagues, and fellow artisans. We will miss her dearly and always remember her smile, her laugh, her strength, and courage.
Lia is survived by: Her parents Jacob and Adriana “Jean” den Braber; sister Christina and brother-in-law David Vaden; nieces Cherie Martinez (Joe) and Kari Perkins; great-nephew Dylan Peterman, aunts, uncles and cousins in the Netherlands, and a host of loving friends and co-workers.
Lia was cremated in Alabama. A Celebration of Life will be held in California on May 21, 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB.
