James "Squirrel" Smelley

James "Squirrel" SmelleySylacauga, AL - Funeral service for James "Squirrel" Smelley, 90, will be Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Radney-Smith Chapel with Rev. R.L. Morris and Judge Terry Mitchell officiating.  Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Sylacauga, AL.Mr. Smelley died Monday, April 27, 2015 at Coosa Valley Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Lee Smelley, mother, Corine Lightsey Smelley and brother, Walter Jackson Smelley, Sr.  He celebrated his 90th birthday with a special surprise party on March 5th at Spring Terrace Assisted Living Home where he resided; he also had a second planned large family party on March 14th.  Mr. Smelley was an avid Auburn fan.  He was employed with Norfolk Southern Rail Road for 27 years.  Mr. Smelley was a member of the Little League Club for several years in Coosa County, Hatchett Creek Hunting Club for over 50 years, and Chairman of Board of Directors for the Stewartville Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the COACH team for Cancer of Coosa County.He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Johnston, husband George Richard of Sylacauga and Geneva Hobaugh, husband Daniel of Garland, TX; nephews, Walter J Smelley, Jr. and Kevin Hobaugh; nieces, Debra Hobaugh Irwin, Sue Ellen Johnston, Marilyn Johnston Hibbs, Roxanne Johnston Kelly and Frances Smelley McBrien; sister in law, Betty Smelley; longtime friend Allison Morris and a host of friends.  The family would like to thank Geneva Woods, special caregiver, Pam and Wendell of Stewartville, Charlene Green of Sylacauga and all the great doctors and nurses that took care of him at Spring Terrace Assisted Living and Coosa Valley Medical Center.Visitation will be Wednesday, April 29, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Radney-Smith Funeral Home.The family will accept flowers or contributions may be made to the Stewartville Volunteer Fire Department, 4754 AL Hwy 21, Sylacauga, AL 35151 or to the Hatchett Creek Hunting Club, PO Box 1422, Alexander City, AL 35011.Pallbearers will be Nathan Riddle, Tyler Riddle, Dan Burrell, Clay McBrien, Timmy Mitchell, Wendell Weathers, Mike Harmon and Roy Hanna.  Honorary pallbearers will be member of Stewartville Volunteer Fire Department.Memorial messages may be sent to the family at www.radneysmith.com.Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga, AL will direct the services.
