Margaret Hendrix Walker of Sylacauga slipped away from this life to the next with a circle of family around her in body and spirit. She was an unbelievable force of joy and total excitement for life that was infectious. Having her children and extended family fill her home with conversations in the kitchen, some cheers from those watching sports, especially football, a baseball game for wannabes in the front yard, and a few coloring with chalk on the driveway would be her idea of a perfect day. None of life’s trials ever stole Margaret’s faith in God, they didn’t even chip it, nor did they change her outlook that not only was her cup half full, her cup “runneth over.” Living almost her whole life in Sylacauga, she loved this community like no other and delighted in helping others, especially the elderly and children of this community. She worked in various positions with elder care in Sylacauga, but she spent the last 13 years of her working life as a much sought after teacher of 4K children at The First United Methodist Church, specializing in reading. She loved each and every one of her students almost as much as she did her family. She met every life struggle, challenge, blessing, or joy with smiles. She was the epitome of strength through love, kindness, a touch of grit, and laughter, something we all will miss.
Margaret was predeceased by her loving parents, Glenn and Maggie Hendrix, her sister and best friend, Glenda Fitzgerald, and her always fun brother-in-law, Paul Fitzgerald. She is survived by her children, Rick Lessley, (Edith Lyle,) of Birmingham, Mark Lessley of Sylacauga, Angela Vansandt (Craig) of Sylacauga, Mike Lessley (John Rorrer,) of Anchorage, Alaska, her grandchildren, Christina Quesenberry (Verlon) of Sylacauga, Adam Vansandt (Tabitha Cleveland) of Sylacauga, Robert Lessley (Paige) of Trussville, Preston Lessley (Kat Beidler) of Tuscaloosa, and Cody Lessley of Hoover, her great grandchildren, Haydan, Shelby, Mason, Harper, River, and Tanner, her nieces and nephew, Paula Fitzgerald, John Fitzgerald (Shelia) and Anne Knapp (Greg).
The family will have a private service to celebrate Margaret.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the building fund at The First Baptist Church of Sylacauga.
