Mrs. Alice Mae Lane Lewis, 92, passed away Wednesday morning, May 30, 2102, at her home in Sylvania. Alice was born in Early Branch, South Carolina to the late Connie Fairy and Minnie Lee Tuten Lane. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar "Pop" Lewis, her brother, Connie W. Lane, her son, Jack Griffin, and a granddaughter, Alison Cornwell.
In her earlier years, she was a member of The Young Matrons Sewing Club, the Sylvan Heights Garden Club, and the Birthday Club. She spent most of her life championing causes and nurturing her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She and her husband were part of the group that started the Sylvan Heights area. Her latest accomplishment was to promote and help complete the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church of Sylvania where she was a lifelong member. She loved her Sunday School group, the Virginia Class, and the WMU. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and was famous for her sour cream pound cakes. Even at 92, she was young at heart and could always find something to make others laugh.
Survivors include: Two Daughters and Sons-in-Law: Connie and Duane Bohr of Sylvania, and Stephanie and Ben Dixon of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Grandchildren: Stephen Lane and Marcene Cornwell, Alice Anne and Bill Iwinski, Amy Elizabeth and Tom McClure, and Jennifer Arlene and Todd Bazemore, 7 Great-Grandchildren, and Several Nieces and Nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lewis will be held Friday, June 1, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. at the Sylvania First Baptist Church with Dr. Charlie Cooper, Dr. David Wilson, and Mr. Tom Avret officiating. Burial will be in the Screven County Memorial Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be: William Lariscy, Larry Lariscy, W. J. Tyre, James Hill, Brice Nelson, Chris Matheson, Bill Hawkins and Dr. Bill Kent.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Members of the Virginia Sunday School Class of Sylvania First Baptist Church, Members of the Birthday Club of Pop's Kitchen, and Special Friends, Mary Frances Blalock and Nell Zeagler.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
