

Sylvania – Tommy L. Sowell, age 71, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 12, 2013. He was a life long resident of Screven County, son of the late Bowers and Janie Jenkins Sowell. Tommy was retired from Union Camp/International Paper after over 35 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a member of Midway Hunting Club. He enjoyed wood working, having crafted many swings. He was a member of Jackson Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Virginia Ayers, Fred Sowell, L.D. (Sam) Sowell, Deweese Lee and Wadley Sowell, and a granddaughter, Emily Rose Sowell.
Survivors are his wife of 49+ years, Hilda Jane Hinely Sowell; three children, Bonnie (Bill) Watkins, Janet (Lynn) Godbee and Casey (Reece) Sowell; six grandchildren, Krista (Brian) Moore, Nikki (Loyd) Taylor, Tyler Godbee, Hannah (Ashton) deKoning, Sarah and Elaine Sowell, and a great granddaughter, Natalie Lanier; two sisters, Wilmer Clyde Anderson and Sally (Robert) Haynes, two sisters-in-law, Helen Sowell and JoAnn Sowell; numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, at Jackson Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph Dixon and Rev. Pete Wall officiating. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Members of Midway Hunting Club, Senior Sunday School Class, Jackson Lunch Bunch, Clifford and Linda Lee, Roy and Kathy Boykin, and Will and Ben Boyd will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm on Wednesday at the Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home.
