Barbara Anne Votypka of Woodbury, Long Island passed away peacefully on June 22, 2022. She was 93 years old. Born on January 10,1929 in New Washington, Ohio, she was the loving wife of Alfred Votypka for 65 years and dear mother to Barbara Valdes, Jeffrey Votypka and Susanne Bernt. She was “Nana” to five grandchildren; Alexandra and Ryan Votypka and Christopher, Daniel and Juliana Bernt.
Barbara loved to travel. She graduated from St Vincent’s in Toledo, Ohio in 1949 with a degree in nursing. At just 20 years of age and unable to begin her job as a pediatric nurse at the Cleveland Clinic until she turned 21, she embarked on a whirlwind tour of Europe. She returned to Europe in 1956 with her future sister-in-law to rendezvous with her fiance at Hotel Dragoni in Rome upon his arrival on the USS Yellowstone. Throughout their long marriage Barbara and Al traveled often. They enjoyed trips to Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands and Tahiti, but their favorite destination was the US Virgin Islands.
Barbara was active in the Mercy League and the Christian Mother’s Association. She returned to nursing as a private duty nurse for pediatric cancer patients. She enjoyed entertaining and was known for her annual Christmas party and summer lobster bakes.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Sister Mary Grace Memorial Scholarship Fund which offers annual scholarships to students of nursing and other health care professions and are based on merit, talent and financial need.
