OTHER SURVIVORS: Two daughters Karen Santaromita (Mark) of Oyster Bay, NY, and Jacqueline Rush (Jack) of Laurel Hollow, NY, a son James Keenan (Michele) of Huntington, NY, a brother William Francis Keenan (Rita) of Danvers, MA, three grandsons, Sean Patrick Rush, Aiden John Keenan and Michael James Keenan, two granddaughters, Brynne Catherine Rush and Riley Shae Keenan, and several nieces and nephews.
EDUCATION: Saint Mary’s Boys High School, Lynn, MA (1950) and Northeastern University, Boston, MA (1957 and 1960).
MILITARY SERVICE: United States Naval Reserve (1951-1966). Was honorably retired with rank of Chief Petty Officer
EMPLOYMENT: Worked in various technical positions at Transitron Electric Corp, Bomac Laboratories, and Honeywell Data Systems in Massachusetts. In 1962, relocated to Long Island, New York and began a 33 year career at Sperry Gyroscope Company and its successor company Unisys Corporation. Retired from Unisys after 33 years of service to the U.S. Navy Fleet Ballistic Submarine program as a field engineer and in software engineering management. During the field engineering segment of his career, had many long and short term assignments to points around the globe. These included travel to Norway, Ireland, The Netherlands, Scotland, Spain, Greece, Japan and Hawaii, as well as numerous destinations within the continental United States.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: Served as Webelos Den Leader, Cub scout Pack 168, and Asst. Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster and Committee Chairman, Troop 170, Boy Scouts of America, Syosset, NY. Also held several positions in Rough Rider District, Theodore Roosevelt Council, BSA, and was a member of the summer camp staff at Onteora Scout Reservation for several years. Volunteered in the production greenhouse at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, Oyster Bay, NY. Was a regular whole blood and platelet donor to L.I. Blood Services, until health considerations curtailed that activity.
HOBBIES: Earned a private pilot license. Liked to play golf, and was active in bowling and softball leagues at Sperry, and was a lifelong Boston Red Sox and New York Football Giants fan. Became an enthusiastic, amateur genealogist and accumulated a vast amount of family tree information. After marrying Joan, who he met at Sperry, and settling in Syosset, began a secondary career as a handyman and became known to the neighbors as the man who “rebuilt” his house. This came to include the homes of his children. Enjoyed local community theatre, an occasional Broadway show, and trips to Disney World with the family.
